The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon State Ranch is bold, racy and super-expressive. Lifted floral and savory notes add complexity to red and purplish berry fruit in this super-expressive Yountville Cabernet Sauvignon. Medium in body and silky with soft contours, the State Ranch will drink well with minimal cellaring. Even in the early going, it is impressive. ... More details

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon State Ranch gives up chocolate-covered cherries, wild blueberries and warm cassis scents with touches of violets, star anise, mossy bark and crushed rocks. Medium to full-bodied, the palate offers a good amount of juicy fruit with soft, well played tannins and an earthy finish.

Rated 92 by Wine Spectator
A focused, slightly old-school version, with a cast iron note framing a core of cassis and dark plum fruit while savory and tobacco leaf details peek through. For fans of a little austerity in their Cabernets. Best from 2022 through 2036. 4,782 cases made.

Soft and easy with round tannins and attractive berry, currant, chocolate and almond character. Medium to full body. Delicious finish. Drink now.

Rated 90 by Wine Enthusiast
From a site planted to both older and younger vines, this is a juicy, tannic and chalky wine, textured in oak and tannin. Red and black cherry highlight a soft, supple midpalate that develops in the glass, lifted by black pepper and clove.
Winery
From the outset, this is one powerful, deeply expressive Cabernet with heady black currant, plum, and cedar aromas leading into a big, juicy entry. Layered currant and black cherry flavors are accented by elegant clove notes. Bold, coating tannins support frame the entire wine, and hints of wet slate add dimension to a dark, brooding finish.

Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon

From the valleys of California and Chile to the rolling hillsides of the Bordeaux region of France, the one red wine grape varietal you will find in abundance is the Cabernet Sauvignon. This darkly colored grape has been cultivated since the mid 18th century, when it was borne from a cross of fine Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc varietals. Since then, it has spread around the world and has been received with pleasure by wineries looking for a varietal which delivers excellence of flavor and aroma, whilst being hardy enough to resist frost and rot and other such difficulties. Indeed, Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most recognizable red wine grape varietal on earth, and is easily distinguished by its high tannin level and acidic nature, which is often so beautifully mellowed by being blended with Merlot and other such grapes.

Region: California

When it comes to New World wine regions, it is widely agreed that many of the finest wines are grown and produced in California. The long stretches of coastline and the valleys and mountainsides which come off them are ideal areas for vine cultivation, and for over a century now, wineries have found a perfect home in the hot, dry state, with many of the wines produced here going on to reach world class status. The state is greatly helped by the brisk oceanic winds which cool the otherwise hot and dry vineyards, which hold mineral rich soils covering vast areas and featuring many established wineries. The state is split into four main regions, the largest by far being the central valley which stretches over three hundred miles in length.

Country: United States

For three hundred years now, the United States has been leading the New World in wine production, both in regards to quantity and quality. Wine is actually produced in all fifty states across the country, with California leading the way by an enormous margin. Indeed, as much as eighty-nine percent of all wines to come out of the United States are produced in California, where the fertile soils and sloping mountain sides, coupled with the long, hot summers provide ideal conditions for producing high quality, European style red, white and rosé wines. With over a million acres of the country under vine, the United States sits comfortably as the fourth largest wine producer in the world, where imported grape varietals from all over the Old World are processed using a successful blend of traditional and contemporary techniques.

Appellation: Napa Valley

In the United States of America, one wine region seems to stand head and shoulders above all others. The Napa Valley of California has long been considered one of the world's premier wine regions, and the wineries which operate in this idyllic landscape now have generations of expertise when it comes to coaxing the very finest flavors and aromas from the imported varietals which thrive there. Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Merlot and Zinfandel have become the flagship grape varietals of the Napa Valley, however, recent years have seen much expansion and experimentation undertaken by the large and small wineries which call the valley their home. With ideal climatic conditions for viticulture, and wonderfully rich and fertile soils, the Napa Valley continues to grow and impress each year.
