The 2022 Chardonnay Fosil hails from Zuccardi’s San Pablo Vineyard in the Uco Valley. It was aged in 75% concrete vats, with the remainder going into used French oak barrels. In the glass, it’s yellow with a greenish sheen. The complex aromas range from green apple peel to chamomile, lime, and mountain herbs such as huacatay, with a pastry backdrop adding further depth. On the palate, it’s lean and dry with a chalky texture and refreshingly tart acidity. The vibrant character is a showcase for the terroir with its austere, herbal notes. Pure and mineral nose with limey citrus and a hint of white almond. Quite transparent on the palate with an elegant but zingy mouthfeel. Transparent, but it also has lots of stamina and verve. 25% fermented in old 500 liter barrels. Drink now or hold.

From San Pablo, one of the coldest places in the Uco Valley, at roughly 1,400m above sea level and 300m from the nearest mountain. This smells gorgeous with hints of tropical fruit; pineapple and lime, peach, apricot, even mango with a minty, herbal element and dots of chamomile too, crisp as well as enveloping on the palate, round and vibrant, such a thrill with clarity and persistence. Round, succulent but sharp, with a lovely light touch in terms of texture. Mouthwateringly clean with a stone-laced finish. So pure and real, a transparent expression of the place with focus on the texture, juiciness and fruit. A beautiful length too, this makes you want another sip straight away. A totally captivating wine with amazing energy, tension and thrill, combining bitterness, salinity and exotic fruit with an underlying crystalline purity and a residual, almost sugary, hit that lingers. A brilliant wine from winemaker Sebastian Zuccardi. 90% fermented in concrete, 10% in 500l old barrels. Ageing 90% concrete, 10% barrels for one year. No malolactic fermentation.

Varietal: Chardonnay

In the past couple of decades, the sales of wines made with Chardonnay grapes has risen and fallen more than once. For many people, this green skinned grape was marred by a poor reputation for bland and uninteresting wines, a great shame considering the fact that Chardonnay grapes have proven time and time again to be interesting, versatile and full of surprises. Most commonly, fine Chardonnay wines are buttery, smooth and creamy as a result of malolactic fermentation, yet with hints of tropical fruits and orchard fruits such as apples and pears. What is most remarkable about Chardonnay grapes, however, is the fact that unlike many other 'white' grapes, they are exceptionally good at holding the characteristics of their terroir in the bottle. As such, despite their fluctuating reputation, this is one grape varietal which produces constantly surprising, impressive and varied wines.

Region: Cuyo

Argentina's Cuyo region has, for several decades now, been renowned worldwide for the high quality of its fruit-forward and remarkably flavorful wines. The arid region includes such famous provinces as the Mendoza, and wineries in Cuyo often have generations of experience when it comes to making the most of the mineral rich yet arid soils which typify the mountainous landscape. The Desaguadero River and its tributaries form many natural valleys through the Cuyo region, and as such, irrigation has long since provided the dry and dusty vineyard with a fertile and crystal-clear water source, straight from the snowy peaks of the nearby Andes. Although Malbec is the grape varietal most commonly associated with Cuyo, wineries continue to experiment with other varietals there, and the wine industry of Cuyo in Argentina continues to go from strength to strength.

Nowadays, well crafted wines from smaller vineyards in Argentina are being lauded as some of the finest in the world, and the country is starting to reap the benefits of its heritage, which include some very old vines, and up to four centuries of experience in wine production.
