Cropped at a mere ten hectoliters per hectare thanks to devastating spring frosts, the 2016 Grands Echezeaux Grand Cru is one of the finest wines Maxim Cheurlin has produced to date. Unfurling in the glass with complex aromas of cherries, cassis, dark chocolate, grilled venison, loamy soil and black truffle, it's full-bodied, deep and multidimensional, with searing levels of concentration, rich structuring tannins and bright acids, concluding with a long and expansive finish.

Whereas Maxime Cheurlin usually produces eight barrels of Grands-Echezeaux (which is really rather a generous yield from a 0.4 hectare parcel), this year he made only three. But the quality of those three barrels must be some compensation for the smaller quantity - notes of dark fruit, orange rind, smoked duck, bonfire and spice precede an ample, full-bodied wine with real grand cru depth and amplitude, structured around rich, ripe tannins; its finish is long and penetrating.

The 2016 Grands Echézeaux Grand Cru has a very intense bouquet with layers of black cherries, boysenberry and crushed stone aromas, though it becomes more floral with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannin, and a fine bead of acidity. Backward but intense with a fresh but paradoxically introspective finish that suggests it will require several years in bottle. Another bottle at Burgfest did not convey the same degree of freshness, hence the question mark against my score. Tasted at the Domaine.

92-94 Reduction. As is usually the case the broad-shouldered flavors possess more size and weight though perhaps a bit less than I usually see between the Ech and this wine. I like both the intensity and the polished mouthfeel that add appeal of the sappy and built-to-age finish that is hugely long but not really austere. In sum, this powerful effort should be capable of effortlessly aging over the next 15 to 20 years.

Varietal: Pinot Noir

Whilst the Pinot Noir grape varietal has its origins in France, and is most closely associated with fine Burgundy wines, it is now grown in almost every wine producing country in the world. There are many reasons for this – the densely packed, deep black bunches of fruits are responsible for making a wide variety of excellent wines, generally agreed to be amongst the most drinkable and accessible one can find. With flavors ranging from currants and red and black berries, to more earthy, spicy notes, Pinot Noir is a versatile varietal which is revered for its relatively light body and beautifully vivid red color However, the grapes themselves are notoriously susceptible to various diseases, and struggle in fluctuating climates. This has not stopped wineries planting and cultivating these vines, though, as Pinot Noir, when grown carefully and treated properly, is a grape with a wide and increasing fan-base, and more often than not produces wonderful wines.

To add to this, there are early written records praising the exceptional wines produced in this region dating back to the 6th century, making Burgundy one of the oldest established and still operational wine regions in the world. The region is most commonly associated with fine red wines, with Pinot Noir being the primary grape varietal grown on its rolling hillsides and gently sloping valleys. However, Chardonnay grapes are also produced in abundance for the production of their fine white wines, with both varietals benefiting greatly from the region's warm, hot summers and the superb soils which make up the terroir.
