Another heavenly white from this estate is the 2020 Hermitage Blanc, which is the usual 80% Marsanne and 20% Roussanne from a mix of lieux-dits. Incredibly perfumed with notes of acacia flowers, buttered stone fruits, toasted brioche, honeysuckle, and crushed stone, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a seamless, layered texture, beautiful mid-palate depth, and a great finish. The purity, balance, and intensity here are just about off the charts, and this beauty deserves a solid decade of bottle age, although you'll be excused if you drink one in its youth as well. ... The 2020 vintage is 'an amazing surprise', according to Jean-Louis Chave. 'It's like the vines adapted to the heat of the vintage - so it's full of hope for me.' A tasting of the different lieux-dits confirms that although this is a hot, dry vintage, the whites have a great sense of freshness, balance and vivacity. This doesn't have the same sense of power and extract as the 2017 or 2019; it is slimmer and more precise, will offer a lot of pleasure early on and will age well, too.

96-98 I tasted five different lots that will be blended into the 2020 Hermitage Blanc, from Péléat, l'Ermite and three parts of Les Rocoules. Full-bodied, honeyed and rich, this should be another outstanding vintage for Chave's white, with the incredible lushness of the bigger wines balanced by the zestiness found at the top of Les Rocoules and the delicacy and freshness of L'Ermite.

Takes your breath away. Showing extraordinary concentration, vivid energy and precision, this is sunny and warm, with a generous core of peach and apple flanked by mineral, smoke, subtle toast and finely crushed salt. Reveals lemon oil and green herbs on the powerful, seemingly endless finish. Incredibly alluring now, this has a long life ahead in the cellar -- for those who can resist. Marsanne and Roussanne. Drink now through 2035. 1,100 cases made, 125 cases imported.

Varietal: White Rhone Blend

For centuries, the Rhone region of France has been producing blended white wines of exceptional quality and character, which are consistently counted as being amongst the finest in the world. The skill and expertise demonstrated by the master vintners of this special region has been much imitated and emulated across the globe, but few other countries can come close to the excellence of the original. The secret to the superb flavors and character of blended Rhone wines are the careful use of a couple of high quality grape varietals, with most wineries using no more than two varietals in their blend. The grapes used are most commonly Viognier, Rousanne, Marsanne or Grenache Blanc, and these particular varietals lend the blended white wines of Rhone their distinctive floral aromas and brightness of flavor.

Region: Rhone Valley

For over two thousand years, the southern French region of the Rhone Valley has been home to wine-makers and wineries of many different types. The ancient Greeks were the first to discover that a wide range of grape varietals can flourish in the rich soils and micro-climates which typify the region, and little has changed to this day. In the modern age, the Rhone Valley is recognized around the world as the home of excellent quality white, red and rosé wines, as well as some of the most highly respected blended wines on earth. The region is split into two distinctive sub-regions, with the cooler, continental northern sub-region producing primarily Syrah, Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier wines of exquisite quality, and the hotter southern sub-region growing a much wider variety of grapes.

Country: France

France is renowned across the globe for its quality wines and the careful expertise which goes into making them, but what is truly remarkable about this relatively small country is the vast range of wines it produces in such huge amounts each year. Not only are the finest red wines in the world said to come from the beautiful regions of Bordeaux and Burgundy, but elsewhere in the country we find the Champagne region, and areas such as the Rhone Valley and the Loire, whose white wines consistently receive awards and accolades by the plenty. This range is a result of the great variety of climatic conditions and terrain found in France, coupled with generations of wine makers working within single appellations. Their knowledge of specific terroirs and grape varieties has, over time, perfected the production of wines within their region, and the end results continue to impress the world to this day.
