The 2018 Saumur Brézé Clos des Carmes derives from vines planted on a south-facing parcel. It offers up a delicate, deep bouquet with aromas of ripe pear, herbs, iodine and orchard fruit intertwined with an elegantly flinty character. Full-bodied and concentrated, layered and seamless, it's a lively, rather muscular wine with a fleshy core of fruit and a delicate, long and salty finish. As usual, this overperforming estate from clay-limestone soils has produced a powerful yet excellent white wine. ... More details

Winery
Romain’s grandfather acquired this historic parcel on the hill of Brézé in 1955. It is one of the three clos of Brézé classified as “Très Grands Vins de Saumur” by Maurice Edmond Saillant. Only grapes from 1 hectare of the highest quality vines go into this cuvée, while the remainder is declassified. In the vineyard, massal selection is used for replacing vines which are planted at a density of 5,500 vines per hectare, with an average yield of 30 hL per hectare.

green grapes

Varietal: Chenin Blanc

One of the most versatile white wine grape varietals in the world is the Chenin Blanc, a green skinned grape most closely associated with the still and sparkling wines of the Loire Valley, but which are cultivated in many countries across the globe and revered for their fine character and unique attributes. One of the key features of the Chenin Blanc grape is the fact that it is able to express the characteristics of the terroir it is grown on, making for highly interesting and complex white wines prized by those looking for something a little different. Their high acidity means they are perfect for producing a wide range of different wine styles, from flavorful still white wines to elegant crémants and sweet, viscous and unusual dessert wines.

Region: Loire Valley

The Loire Valley in France is home to many of the world's finest examples of white, rosé and sparkling wines, with a wide range of both dry and sweet examples being produced each year to international claim. Whilst Chenin Blanc and Sauvignon Blanc make up for much of the vineyards in the region, certain areas of the Loire Valley also produce superb red wines, such as the Cabernet Franc wines from the Chenin sub-region. This variety and level of excellence has long been admired, with the Loire Valley being highly favored in the middle ages by the crowned heads of Europe, and with a wine-making tradition which stretches back to the first century and perhaps beyond. The region has a wonderful continental climate, where hot summers meet oceanic winds, and excellent rich terroir carried by the river that flows through it.
