The green skinned grapes of the Sauvignon Blanc varietal had their origins in Southern France, where they are still widely grown and used for many of the excellent young and aged white wines the region is famous for. Today, however, they are grown in almost every wine producing country in the world, and are widely revered for their fresh and grassy flavors, full of tropical notes and refreshing, zesty character. Sauvignon Blanc grapes thrive best in moderate climates, and ripen relatively early in the year. Semillon was, at one point not so long ago, widely believed to be one of the most grown grape varietals in the world. The grapes are recognizable by their golden color, and the fact that they can take on a pinkish hue in particularly warm climates. Known as Syrah in most countries around the world, and Shiraz in Australia and certain other regions of the New World, this grape varietal has proven over the centuries to be one of the most powerful and flavorful red wine grapes there is. Year in, year out, France enjoys its prestigious reputation as the producer of the finest wines in the world.
