Pale to medium lemon-gold colored, the 2018 Coutet has super intense, well-delineated notions of warm pineapple, green guava and baked pineapple with hints of mandarin peel, gingerbread, orange blossoms and lime leaves. #58 TOP 100 CELLAR SELECTIONS 2021. This wine is beautifully textured. The orange-peel and candied fruitiness are balanced by a dry core of botrytis that gives the wine weight while keeping a light touch. It has all the tight freshness and minerality typical of this great estate. Drink from 2026.

The 2018 Coutet is a powerful, viscous Sauternes. Orange marmalade, hazelnut, dried rose petal, honey and burnt sugar all give the 2018 a real feeling of both volume and depth. There are some angular contours that hopefully will soften in time. Today, Coutet is a bit unbalanced and does not have the charm that is common in 2018.

Rather bold, with lots of ginger and graham cracker details out front, followed by warm glazed peach and pineapple flavors. A flash of green tea in the background adds a tantalizing note. Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle. Drink now through 2032. 1,458 cases made.

A delicate, refined Barsac with dried lemon, apricot and a medium-sweet palate. Medium body. Bright finish. Lighter style of Coutet. Drink now.

Country: France

French winemakers are subjected to several laws and regulations regarding the wines they produce, and how they can be labeled and sold. Such procedures are designed to increase the overall quality of the country's produce, and also to ensure that wines made in each particular region or appellation are of a character and type which is representative of the area. Thankfully for consumers of wine world-wide, the French have a particularly high reputation to uphold, and seem to do so flawlessly. Every year, wineries from all over France produce millions upon millions of bottles of fine wine, making the most of their native grape varieties and the excellent terrain which covers most of the country. From the expensive and exquisite red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy, to the white wines and cremants of central France, the French are dedicated to providing the world with wines of the highest quality and most distinctive character.
