The property of the Moueix family until 2000, this handsome château of 1750 is owned now by the Labrune family The black-fruited nose is complex, with spicy oak and a light floral character too. Rich and velvety, very concentrated and spicy, this doesn't quite conceal the high alcohol. Spicy and vigorous, it's imposing and has enough acidity to give drive and persistence.

The 2016 La Dauphine is fabulous. Exotic, super-ripe and flamboyant to the core, the 2016 possesses tremendous depth and tons of personality. Blackberry jam, plum, chocolate, espresso, spice and licorice give the 2016 its distinctly dark personality. The extracted style brings out darker shades of fruit and heavy torrefaction notes at the expense of fruit brightness and freshness, which is a stylistic choice. I would prefer to drink the 2016 over the next few years.

Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2016 de la Dauphine reveals notes of baked black cherries, dried mulberries, spice cake and tobacco with a core of blackberry compote and mincemeat pie plus a touch of dark chocolate. Medium to full-bodied, the palate delivers loads of savory accents to complement the ripe black fruits, framed by rounded tannins and finishing on an herbal note.

Black fruits, cedary spice, tobacco, and some chocolate notes emerge from the 2016 Château La Dauphine. it’s a powerful, medium to full-bodied Fronsac that delivers the goods. With sweet fruit, ripe tannins, and outstanding balance, drink it any time over the coming decade.

Varietal: Red Bordeaux

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act – the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.
