The 2016 Petit Figeac is a blend of 41% Cabernet Franc, 36% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 23% Merlot that spent 12-15 months in 30% new French oak. It has a real Figeac bouquet of blackcurrants, truffle, flowers, and forest floor. Silky and medium to full-bodied, this brilliant second wine should be snatched up by readers.

Very cabernet on the nose with blackcurrants, walnuts and fresh herbs. Hints of dried earth. Medium to full body and firm, juicy tannins. Solid. Second wine of Figeac. A blend of 41 per cent cabernet franc, 36 per cent cabernet sauvignon and 23 per cent merlot. Try after 2022.

It was a rainy vintage until June, but then July, August and September were the sunniest for 15 years, with hot days and cool nights. That made it a perfect late season, where the risk was harvesting too late and losing fresh fruit aromatics. They have avoided that here and this wine is a clear step up from the 2014. It's full of well-defined layers with a rich texture and plenty of cocoa, liquorice and dark fruit character. It's approachable now if opened a good few hours before drinking, but will be even better next year. A third of production at the estate goes to Petit Figeac on average and the rest goes to the grand vin. This wine was made with 40% new oak. Drinking Window 2020 - 2034.

A sleek, fresh style, with a breeze of red currant and bitter cherry fruit that pulls light floral, mineral and sanguine notes along with it. A twinge of iron at the end gives this a slightly austere feel, which should loosen with brief cellaring. Best from 2021 through 2030. 3,333 cases made.

Varietal: Red Bordeaux

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act – the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.
