The 2017 Saint Joseph Les Granits Blanc is beautiful and continues to be one of my favorite white wines coming from this appellation (if not the entire Rhône valley). This light gold-colored effort offers up a classic, mineral-laced bouquet of crushed citrus, white flowers, toasted almonds, and spice. Rich, medium to full-bodied, concentrated and incredibly elegant, it's a thrilling white wine that can be drunk today or cellared for over a decade. This cuvée is 100% Marsanne aged in 15% new demi-muids.

A classic, elegant, and intense vintage of Granits Blanc. Fresh, rich aromatic expression: honeysuckle and spiced peach with well-integrated oak spice. Medium-bodied, silky, with brisk acidity. Long, saline finish. Made from 47-year-old Marsanne vines grown on steep, gravelly granitic slopes near Tournon, lieu-dit St-Joseph. 85% is matured in demi-muid for 11 months, 15% new oak, the rest in stainless steel. Drinking Window 2020 - 2027.

Pale yellow. Intense, mineral-dominated nectarine, pear nectar, chamomile and fennel qualities on the nose, along with a sexy floral topnote that expands with aeration. Seamless, concentrated and lively on the palate, offering powerful white peach, tangerine, Anjou pear and honeysuckle flavors. Focus and mineral lift are carried through an impressively persistent finish that features suggestions of Meyer lemon and sweet butter.

Scents of crushed stone and scorched earth mark the nose of the 2017 Saint-Joseph Les Granits Blanc, a pure, barrel-fermented Marsanne offering from the decomposed granite slopes of the Saint-Joseph lieu-dit. Grilled tangerines, hints of bergamot and honey appear on the palate, although the rich, medium to full-bodied wine is clearly dry, with a lingering, citrusy finish.

Region: Rhone Valley

The Rhone Valley of southern France is a particularly fascinating wine region, with a history that stretches back to at least six hundred BCE, when the ancient Greeks first began cultivating vines there. The region itself is split into two distinct sub-regions, with the northern sub-region being famed for its production of exceptional Syrah, Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier wines, packed full of interesting character and expressing the terroir found there. The southern sub-region is home to an enormous variety of grapes, and produces red, white and rosé wines, and some of the world's most famous and adored blended wines. The continental climate of the region is ideal for growing grapes, and the winds which blow from the Central Massif help temper the heat in the vineyards, leading to very ripe fruits holding plenty of flavor.

Country: France

French winemakers are subjected to several laws and regulations regarding the wines they produce, and how they can be labeled and sold. Such procedures are designed to increase the overall quality of the country's produce, and also to ensure that wines made in each particular region or appellation are of a character and type which is representative of the area. Thankfully for consumers of wine world-wide, the French have a particularly high reputation to uphold, and seem to do so flawlessly. Every year, wineries from all over France produce millions upon millions of bottles of fine wine, making the most of their native grape varieties and the excellent terrain which covers most of the country. From the expensive and exquisite red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy, to the white wines and cremants of central France, the French are dedicated to providing the world with wines of the highest quality and most distinctive character.
