• 100% Albariño. • Sourced from a selection of the oldest and most sea-adjacent vines of the pre-phylloxeric Finca del Atelier. • Whole-cluster pressed and fermented spontaneously in thoroughly seasoned French oak. • Protracted aging (approx. 14 months) on the fine lees in barrel before bottling.

The super austere, sharp and mineral 2020 Atalier La Encrucijada reminded me of the first Leirana wines (that were developed by Raúl Pérez and Rodrigo Méndez). It's a classical Albariño vinified in oak (which is unnoticeable), with sharp acidity and laser precision, pungent and sharp beyond its price point. They are some 700 to 800 bottles of this.

Varietal: Albarino

Spain and Portugal were always home to some fantastic quality white wine grape varietals, and amongst the finest is the Albarino. Thought to be a close relative of the French Savagnin grape, the Albarino varietal has been grown in Spain since the 12th century, and has always been revered by Spanish winemakers for its ability to produce white wines of exceptional quality and character. Typically, wines made from the Albarino grape are dry, with a light body and a lovely high level of acidity which cuts through the soft fruit flavors it carries. These grapes produce exceptionally aromatic white wines, and are generally associated with notes of apricot and peach. It often has a slightly bitter quality, as a result of its thick skins and large quantities of pips, but this merely adds to the balance and nature of the wine.

Galicia, in northern Spain, was once a prosperous and highly popular wine producing region. Despite the strong influence and often bad weather brought by the Atlantic Ocean, the vintners of Galicia knew how to make the most of the grape varietals which thrived in their vineyards, and were renowned for producing excellent, characterful wines full of flavor and beautiful aromatic qualities. However, the economic collapse which occurred in Galicia in the 19th century all but destroyed the region's wine industry and reputation, and it looked as though the region would never recover. Thankfully for lovers of Spanish wines, plenty of money and effort was spent in rebuilding the Galician wine industry over the past few decades, and today, more and more wineries are once again making their distinctive single variety and blended white and red wines, and finding new fans across the globe.
