From gray slate, the 2015 Pündericher Marienburg Riesling GG Falkenlay is pure, yet deep, intense and flinty on the nose. On the palate, this is a very intense, round and juicy Riesling, charmingly round and mouth-filling, with lush and intense fruit, great purity, finesse and mineral tension in the persistent finish. It is bottled with 7.1 grams of residual sugar. ... More details

This is still very funky and opens up very slowly, but there’s great concentration from the first great surge of peachy fruit to the tightly knit intensely mineral finish. In spite of all the power, it feels virtually weightless. A stunning wine if you’ve got patience.

As usual, this site is reflected in the most overtly stony and austere of Busch's dry Rieslings and needs the longest time in bottle to really display its potential. Lemon, grapefruit and pear strongly marked by their seeds deliver pungent aromas and inform a glossy, expansive palate, leading to a gripping, piquant and slightly chewy finish no doubt rendered more forceful (though not warm) by the weight of 12.5 percent alcohol.
Winery
65-90 year old ungrafted vines planted on grey slate. A dry wine from a site famous for its noble sweets. Firm, vivid, gingery, incredibly ripe and saline with acidity that elevates it to a quiveringly “alive” state of being. Perhaps the best food wine in this collection and clearly a long term cellar candidate.

Varietal: Riesling

Riesling grapes have been grown in and around central Europe for centuries, and over time, they became the lasting symbol of south Germany's ancient and proud wine culture. Whilst the reputation of German wines abroad has in the past been mixed, the Germans themselves take an enormous amount of pride in their wineries, and Riesling grapes have now spread around the globe, growing anywhere with the correct climate in which they can thrive. Riesling grape varietals generally require much cooler climatic conditions than many other white grapes, and they are generally considered to be a very 'terroir expressive' varietal, meaning that the features and characteristics of the terroir they are grown on comes across in the flavors and aromas in the bottle. It is this important feature which has allowed Riesling wines to be elevated into the category of 'fine' white wines, as the features of the top quality bottles are generally considered to be highly unique and offer much to interest wine enthusiasts.

Country: Germany

If German wine has had something of a bad reputation in the past, it may well be the fault of the fact that for a long time now, the Germans have simply kept all the best produce to themselves. Visit any town or village in wine producing regions of Germany, and you'll be faced with a stunning array of extremely high quality wines, each matched with local dishes and full of distinct character and flavor. As white wine production makes up for about two-thirds of all Germany's wine industry, this is by far the most visible and widely enjoyed type of wine, but one should not overlook the quality and range of rosé and red wines on offer from this fascinating country. In particular, the Spatburgunder wines (the German name for Pinot Noir) are generally of an exceptionally high quality, being full of dark, intense hedgerow fruit flavors and exciting spicy notes with a silky smooth finish.
