From Piedmont comes this intriguing white blend of Chardonnay (75%) and Nebbiolo, the latter made as a blanc-de-noir. It’s a heady, nutty wine that’s bold in character but has an undercurrent of freshness and salinity. Two years’ aging in old oak barrels bring a richness and caramel note to the tropical fruit freshness creating delicious balance and tension. Drinking Window 2020 - 2030. ... More details

The 2016 Solea, a blend of Chardonnay and Nebbiolo (fermented white, with no skin contact) from Roagna's Pira vineyard in Castiglione Falletto remains one of the most distinctive whites in Piedmont. Silky, nuanced and super-expressive, the 2016 is a very pretty white with attractive apple, peach, stone and floral notes. Drink it over the next few years.

Apple, lemon and spice aromas and flavors are supported by juicy structure in this white. Harmonious, yet piquant and even has light tannins that emerge on the finish. Chardonnay. Drink now through 2023. 225 cases made.

The 2016 Langhe Solea is a blend of mostly Chardonnay with 20% Nebbiolo (grapes are sourced from the Pira vineyard and are processed off the skins as a white wine). Luca Roagna’s father first made this wine as an experiment in 1988. The two varieties are immediately assembled and fermented as one. In fact, the Chardonnay is harvested at full maturity to add to the pronounced aromatic profile of the wine, and the Nebbiolo is harvested early in order to provide the acidity and crispness. The wine ages in new oak for two years, with that oak transferred over to the red-wine program afterwards. This is a luminous and bright white wine with a very unique and precise aromatic profile—almost exotic I would say—that prizes apricot, preserves lemon, toasted almond and a touch of Moroccan spice.

Region: Piedmont

The region of Piedmont in the cool, breezy north-western part of Italy is renowned throughout the world for high quality, flavorful and delicious red wines, and for the elegant and refined sparkling wines such as Asti which typify the area. The region is located at the foothills of the Alps, close to the French and Swiss borders, and benefits from some interesting micro-climates formed by its proximity to the mountain range. The key grapes for the fine red wines of Piedmont are Nebbiolo, Dolcetto and Barbera – all powerful varietals which are packed full of a range of fruit flavors and which have an affinity for oak making them ideal for aging When it comes to the sparkling Asti, wineries cultivate plenty of Moscato grapes, whose relative transparency make them ideal for expressing their terroir and providing some interesting flavors in the bottle.

Country: Italy

Italy is recognised as being one of the finest wine producing countries in the world, and it isn't difficult to see why. With a vast amount of land across the country used primarily for vineyard cultivation and wine production, each region of Italy manages to produce a wide range of excellent quality wines, each representative of the region it is produced in. Any lover of Italian wines will be able to tell you of the variety the country produces, from the deliciously astringent and alpine-fresh wines of the northern borders, to the deliciously jammy and fruit-forward wines of the south and the Italian islands. Regions such as Barolo are frequently compared with Bordeaux and Burgundy in France, as their oak aged red wines have all the complexity and earthy, spicy excellence of some of the finest wines in the world, and the sparkling wines of Asti and elsewhere in Italy can easily challenge and often exceed the high standards put forward by Champagne. Thanks to excellent terrain and climatic conditions, Italy has long since proven itself a major player in the world of wines, and long may this dedication to quality and excellence continue.
