Crushed mint, new leather, white truffle and wild berry aromas waft out of the glass on this gorgeous, fragrant wine. Smooth but seriously structured, the focused palate is delicious, delivering crushed Morello cherry, raspberry compote and licorice. Still youthfully austere, it needs several more years to fully develop but it will age and evolve for decades. An absolutely breathtaking wine. Drink 2028–2053. (Cellar Selection)

Beginning to mellow and reach its sweet spot, this red reveals rose hip, cherry, strawberry, currant and freshly mown hay flavors aligned to a sleek frame. This turns austere as it evolves on the palate, with the ripe fruit returning on the long, resonant finish. Elegant and harmonious overall, ending with the essence of ripe berry fruit, tart rose hip and mineral notes. Drink now through 2040. 150 cases made.

Crichet-Pajé has been produced since 1978 but the vineyard was planted back in 1958. From this plot Roagna produces 10 to 15 hectolitres, which it releases after eight years of ageing: four years in oak, followed by concrete and bottle. This is focused on citrus leaf, dried flowers, tar and orange peel, dominated on the palate by orange and chocolate. The tannins are super-dense and velvety, with a chewy finish and tense, almost nervy acidity. Will evolve further.

Varietal: Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo grapes have been grown for centuries in the hilly region of northern Italy, and have more recently started to appear in many New World countries, too, where modern vintners have expressed great enthusiasm for their fine characteristics. Their fame and popularity is widely known, and the Nebbiolo varietal is recognized as the grape responsible for producing the legendary fine wines of Italy. Indeed, this grape is packed full of intense and interesting flavors, ranging from truffle and prune, to tobacco and violets, making the wines they produce a sensory delight which simply get better the longer they are aged. The grapes also lend a beautifully pale red color to their wines, which helped secure their place as some of the finest and most elegant to be found anywhere on earth.
