Immediate notes of freshly poured tar and soy sauce give way to wild strawberries, oven-roasted tomatoes and herbs on the nose, while the palate offers more strawberries along with cherries and a bite of salty dark chocolate. Sticky tannins and substantial acidity carry through a lengthy finish.

The 2019 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Sei is a polished style of red also made from 100% Sangiovese but aged longer (18 months) in French oak. Ripe with notes of cherry candy, sweet cedar, and crushed red flowers, the palate is medium to full-bodied, with more depth of fruit through the mid-palate. Its oak influence is certainly felt, with building tannins and notes of red plum pit, turned earth, and toasted baking spices. It reveals a wonderful purity of fruit underneath its oak and may benefit from having more time to integrate. Allow another year or two and drink 2024-2036.

The 2019 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Sei soars out of the glass with a heady mélange of ripe dark cherry, mocha, menthol, licorice, dried herbs, game, cloves, dried flowers and a touch of oak. A dynamic, layered Chianti Classico, the Sei has much to offer. I especially admire the complexity and energy here.

This has a dark and spiced character with smoky plums, black cherries, cedar and dried herbs. Medium- to full-bodied with grippy tannins. Some spiced oak and bright acidity with a savory finish. From organically grown grapes. Drink after 2024.
Winery
Deep ruby at its core, the wine flashes bright red with every swirl. The aromas that delicately arise recall the long golden afternoons of summer - of salty caper flowers and fig leaves flourishing from sun-baked walls, of ripening figs and morello cherries with their ripe sweetness tempered by savory herbs, nepitella and oregano. Tannins are as firm as potter’s hands sculpting the wine into elegant shape. The finish is long and intricate, with the promise of further stories to tell. Enjoy our Sei, with time to spare, as this is a wine that must not be hurried.

green grapes

Varietal: Sangiovese

The name of this grape, meaning 'blood of Jove' conjures up evocative images of long dead civilizations, and gives the Sangiovese varietal a sense of the holy, the sacred, the special. Indeed, this particular type of Italian grape has been cultivated and processed for thousands of years, and is said to be the original favorite grape varietal of the Romans, and the Etruscans before them. Throughout history, vintners have continued to plant this varietal, and they continue to produce wonderful wines to this day. The long bunches of very dark, round fruit are treasured by fine wineries in Italy and a few other places around the world, and when young, these grapes are lively – full of strawberry flavors and a little spiciness. However, it is when they are aged in oak that they take on some truly special flavors and aromas, as seen in some of the finest wines of the Old World.

Region: Tuscany

The beautiful region of Tuscany has been associated with wine production for almost three thousand years, and as such is one of the oldest and most highly respected wine producing regions in the world. The hot, sunny climate supports quite a wide range of grapes, but the grape varietals most widely grown across this large region are Sangiovese and Vernaccia, both of which are used in the production of Tuscany's most distinctive red and white wines. Cabernet Sauvignon and other imported grape varietals have also flourished there for over two hundred years, but it wasn't until the 1970's and the rise of the 'Super Tuscans' that they were widely used, when the fine wineries of the region began experimenting with Bordeaux style red wines to great effect.

Country: Italy

It isn't difficult to understand why Italy is famed not just for the quality of its wines, but also for the vast variety and range of characteristics found in the wines there. The terrain of the country varies wildly, from the lush rolling green hills and valley of Tuscany, to the sun drenched rocky coasts of Sicily, the mountainous and alpine regions of the north, and the marshy lowlands of the east. Italy really does have a little bit of everything. Combine this huge range of landscapes with an almost perfect climate for grape cultivation, and you have a country seemingly designed for viticultural excellence. The results speak for themselves, and it is clear to see that wine has become an inseparable part of Italian culture as a result of its abundance and brilliance. Each village, city and region has a local wine perfectly matched with the cuisine of the area, and not an evening passes without the vast majority of Italian families raising a glass of locally sourced wine with pride and pleasure.
