The 2011 Amarone della Valpolicella Riserva Scajari is brooding and backward as a whiff of freshly shaved pine gives way to black currants, earth tones and a lifting hint of camphor. This floods the palate with silky textures and opulent red fruits, all nicely contrasted by brisk acidity and a core of salty minerality that adds tension. The Riserva Scajari leaves the mouth aching with youthful structure as grippy tannins saturate, and a primary staining of concentration is left lingering. A lovely, expressive red, with a fragrant nose of cured tobacco and forest floor transitioning to flavors of black cherry reduction, soft fig, anise hyssop and mineral on the silky palate. Reveals fine-grained tannins that are supple and well-meshed, with juicy acidity driving the long finish of sweet fruit and spiced orange peel. Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella and Oseleta. Drink now through 2031. 250 cases made, 50 cases imported.

On the nose, the wine offers notes of black cherries, plum, leather, savory herbs, and, somewhat surprisingly, red rose petals. On the palate, the wine coats without being heavy, with a fine acidity that speaks of its pedigree and a beautiful spine of minerality thanks to the volcanic rocks that lace the vineyards. The finish is long, layered, and giving. A stunning Amarone on all accounts.

Vintage: 2011

The year 2011 was an interesting year for many northern and central European countries, as the weather was more than unpredictable in the spring and summer. However, in most countries, the climatic conditions thankfully settled down in the late summer and fall. The result of this slightly difficult year of weather in France was a set of surprisingly small yields, but overall, these yields were of a higher quality than those harvested in certain previous years. A fantastic set of wines was also made in Italy and Spain, and the Rioja wines - when released - are set to be very good indeed. Austria also had superb year in 2011, with almost fifty percent more grapes being grown and used for their distinctive Gruner Veltliner wines than in the year before. Possibly the European country which had the finest 2011, though, was Portugal, with wineries in the Douro region claiming this year to be one of the best in decades for the production of Port wine, and the bright, young Vinho Verdes wines. In the New World, the Pacific Northwest saw some of the best weather of 2011, and Washington State and Oregon reportedly had a highly successful year, especially for the cultivation of high quality red wine grapes. Chile and Argentina had a relatively cool year, which certainly helped retain the character of many of their key grape varietals, and should make for some exciting drinking. South Africa had especially good weather for their white wine grape varietals, particularly Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, and many South African wineries are reporting 2011 as one of their best years in recent memory.

Varietal: Corvina Blend

The Corvina varietal grape has been long associated with the region of Veneto in Italy, where it is a native varietal which flourishes in the warm and windy climate of this area. In recent decades, it has been planted in several New World countries, where wine makers are often experimenting with traditional Italian varietals in an attempt to emulate their fine wines. Corvina grapes are a key ingredient in several of Italy's best known and most loved wines, including Amarone and Valpolicella, two excellent aged red wines which make the most of Corvina's high acidity levels and wonderful flavors of almond and sour cherry. The Corvina grape has plenty of pigment in its thick skins, resulting in quite a vivid crimson colored wine – an attribute which is also widely celebrated by vintners across the world.

Since those times, a vast amount of Italian land has remained primarily for vine cultivation, and thousands of wineries can be found throughout the entire length and breadth of this beautiful country, drenched in Mediterranean sunshine and benefiting from the excellent fertile soils found there. Italy remains very much a 'land of wines', and one could not imagine this country, its landscape and culture, without it.
