The 2014 Percarlo is one of the most refined young Percarlos I can remember tasting at San Giusto. A silky, polished wine, it makes its case with persistence and length more than power alone. Dark cherry, sage, tobacco and underbrush develop in the glass, but it is the wine's persistence that is most impressive. The 2014 was aged 70% in French oak barrique and 30% in cask. Shows surprising ripeness for the vintage with black-cherry essence, tar, ash, cloves, bark, citrus, cedar and spices. Full-bodied, very silky and long and chewy on the finish. Tannic and muscular, this needs a lot of time, but it’s an amazing effort for a 2014. Pure Sangiovese. Drink in 2022.

The 2014 Percarlo is a pure expression of Sangiovese made from organically farmed grapes. This is a dark and penetrating wine that actually tastes riper, darker and thicker than you might expect of this cool and difficult vintage. The alcohol here is 15%. Black cherry and dried blackberry segue to spice, leather, tar and grilled herb. Despite those bold and opulent fruit flavors, the wine shows moderate complexity and depth. It offers a lot in terms of muscle and power, but it's ultimately more monosyllabic in this vintage. Bottle production was 13,817 units strong.

Black currant and black cherry aromas lead off, with the pure, rich and intense fruit staying at the fore, eventually yielding to graphite, sandalwood and earth notes and a matrix of firm tannins. Very taut and structured.—Non-blind Percarlo vertical (August 2018). Best from 2020 through 2036. 1,200 cases made, 375 cases imported.

Wines made with the round, darkly colored Sangiovese grape varietal tend to demonstrate the grape's key attributes: high acidity, moderate tannins and pale red color These grapes have been grown in their native Italy for thousands of years, and are said to be one of the key varietals which were so loved by the ancient Etruscan and Roman civilization Fast forward a few millennia, and all over the world, wineries are still growing these grapes in order to capture that renowned and flavorful essence. What makes Sangiovese so loved by drinkers and vintners alike is its wonderful ability to soak up the earthy, woody flavors of the oak barrels they are aged in, and present these in the glass alongside fresh, bright summer fruit notes. Whilst Sangiovese grapes are often blended during the fermentation process, they are also drank as single variety wines, both young and fresh, and aged and complex.
