With fruit from La Morra, this wine shows soft fruit, spice and fine tannins that are characteristic of this cru site with beautiful south-facing exposures. The bouquet on the Francesco Rinaldi & Figli 2019 Barolo Rocche dell'Annunziata is initially shy, and you need to give this wine more bottle age. Redcurrant, spice and licorice eventually lift from the bouquet. Production is limited to 3,300 bottles. ... More details

The 2019 Barolo Rocche dell'Annunziata is an elegant, polished wine. Super-classic Rocche aromatics open first. There's plenty of substance on the palate as well, where the wine offers notable resonance and tons of persistence. Kirsch, blood orange, spice, menthol and dried herbs are all beautifully delineated. All this needs is a few years in bottle.

Notes of dried cherries, cocoa powder, pomegranate skins, spices and moist earth. Medium- to full-bodied with firm tannins. Attractive red fruit character that comes with freshness and juiciness. Vivid finish. Try from 2026.

Francesco Rinaldi claims its traditional, slightly old-fashioned style even in the rich but elegant Rocche dell'Annunziata MGA. This 2019 is dense ruby in the glass, with a floral bouquet of rose and violet, quite ripe red cherry fruit, but then a firm palate with grainy, youthful and sticky tannins on the gums, not fully resolved. It's underlined by refreshing brilliant acidity. Not really ready to drink now, but a powerful wine to follow.
Winery
On the palate, this wine is warm, persistent, and harmonious. The greater presence of sand compared to the upper part of the Cru imparts ethereal aromas of great finesse with floral notes of rose and violet. The wine is reminiscent of sweet spices and has a good minerality and extremely elegant tannins.

Varietal: Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is not necessarily a particularly easy grape to cultivate. Indeed, its very late ripening time often means that yield is very low, and they are also quite susceptible to various diseases and forms of rot. However, in their native Italy and in many other countries around the world, wineries persevere with this varietal due to the fact that few other grapes can produce wines as wonderful, complex and flavorful as those made with the Nebbiolo grape. These grapes offer a beautifully pale red juice, packed full of intense flavors such as truffle, violet and prune, making them a real treat for serious wine drinkers looking for a sensory experience not to be forgotten. They are also renowned for their affinity for aging, which allows their strong tannins to mellow and compliment their stunning flavor.

Region: Piedmont

For hundreds of years, the beautiful alpine region of Piedmont in north-west Italy has been producing excellent quality red wines, and some of the most characterful sparkling white wines to have ever come out of the Old World. The region is dominated by the mighty Alps which form the border between Italy, France and Switzerland, and the Moscato grapes that are grown in the foothills of this mountain range carry much of the Alps' flavors in their fruit, and are fed by crystal clear mountain waters. However, it is the Nebbiolo, Dolcetto and Barbera grapes which are the real stars of this region, and the highly respected wineries which cover much of Piedmont have generations of experience when it comes to processing and aging these grape varietals to produce the superb wines which come out of appellations such as Barolo and Barberesco.

Country: Italy

There are few countries in the world with a viticultural history as long or as illustrious as that claimed by Italy. Grapes were first being grown and cultivated on Italian soil several thousand years ago by the Greeks and the Pheonicians, who named Italy 'Oenotria' – the land of wines – so impressed were they with the climate and the suitability of the soil for wine production. Of course, it was the rise of the Roman Empire which had the most lasting influence on wine production in Italy, and their influence can still be felt today, as much of the riches of the empire came about through their enthusiasm for producing wines and exporting it to neighbouring countries. Since those times, a vast amount of Italian land has remained primarily for vine cultivation, and thousands of wineries can be found throughout the entire length and breadth of this beautiful country, drenched in Mediterranean sunshine and benefiting from the excellent fertile soils found there. Italy remains very much a 'land of wines', and one could not imagine this country, its landscape and culture, without it.
