The Schola Sarmenti 2013 Primitivo Diciotto is the proverbial "big boy" wine from Puglia. If you don't get that from the thickness and intensity of its favors, the very heavy glass bottle used to package this wine will certainly clue you in. You'll either love it or leave it because the style adopted here is massive to say the least. The wine's appearance is extracted and impenetrable and there are few fruit nuances to behold. Instead, your senses are treated to an infinite succession of sweet barbecue sauce, smoke, licorice, brown sugar and rum cake aromas. The wine is born big: Fruit is harvested from 80-year-old vines that are so ancient and stressed, they are only capable of producing a mere 500 grams of fruit per vine. For much of the twentieth century, the region was considered one associated primarily with the kind of mass produced, dull Italian wine which almost cost the country its reputation in the 1970s.
