This top-of-the-line Montepulciano impresses in rich aromas of cocoa, cigar box, dill and anise that meld into a deep well of brandy-soaked black cherry and dark plum. It's full and enveloping on the palate yet foursquare in nature, built by small-grained, polished tannins and integrated acidity that frame densely packed dark fruit. Spiced plums linger on the long finish, indicating that this will hold well in the cellar. Drink 2022–2030 at least. (Cellar Selection) ... More details

Polished nose of ripe plums, vanilla, milk chocolate and some dried fruit peel, too. It’s full-bodied and creamy with velvety, smooth tannins. Lots of chocolate and plummy layers that are smooth and decadent without being overripe. Will be even better after another two or three years in bottle.

A rich, medium- to full-bodied red, with flashy vanilla and oak spice on the nose that transitions to a subtle, aromatic thread on the palate, winding through flavors of saturated blackberry, pipe smoke, fig cake and a touch of ganache. Fresh and lightly mouthwatering, with fine-grained tannins and a tang of iron-laced mineral emerging on the finish. Best from 2022 through 2030. 75 cases imported.

The 2015 Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Riserva opens slowly in the glass, as citrus-tinged blackberries give way to exotic spices, hints of cocoa and camphor. This is velvety in texture with a rich and dense display of ripe dark fruits and licorice. Its web of grippy tannins are hardly noticeable, until it’s too late, as the cheeks pucker under the 2015’s youthful structure. Even though it is monolithic today, there are depths still unseen here that will require further cellaring to come forward.
Winery
Rich and ripe dark cherry fruit, along with attractive spicy, smoky notes. Fleshy and full, with surprising depth and length.

Varietal: Montepulciano

The deep and dark wines made from the Montepulciano grape varietal have been hugely popular in Italy for over a thousand years, and remain popular to this day due to their large ripe flavors, and easy drinking character. Indeed, the Montepulciano grape is the second most cultivated red wine grape in Italy, with it being grown in twenty of the country's ninety five wine provinces. In recent decades, it has been cultivated in several other countries in the New World, in places with the correct warm and dry climatic conditions it thrives in. The Montepulciano grape has a low acidity, and medium levels of tannin, making it a smooth wine with a relatively light body, allowing the delicious flavors of ripened autumn fruits take center stage. It produces high yields, and matches well with many different foods.

Country: Italy

There are few countries in the world with a viticultural history as long or as illustrious as that claimed by Italy. Grapes were first being grown and cultivated on Italian soil several thousand years ago by the Greeks and the Pheonicians, who named Italy 'Oenotria' – the land of wines – so impressed were they with the climate and the suitability of the soil for wine production. Of course, it was the rise of the Roman Empire which had the most lasting influence on wine production in Italy, and their influence can still be felt today, as much of the riches of the empire came about through their enthusiasm for producing wines and exporting it to neighbouring countries. Since those times, a vast amount of Italian land has remained primarily for vine cultivation, and thousands of wineries can be found throughout the entire length and breadth of this beautiful country, drenched in Mediterranean sunshine and benefiting from the excellent fertile soils found there. Italy remains very much a 'land of wines', and one could not imagine this country, its landscape and culture, without it.
