Picked on October 19 and 20, the 2017 Berncasteler Doctor Riesling Spätlese is deep and smoky on the rich and intense yet refined and crystalline nose. On the palate, this is a lush, highly elegant, refined and salty-piquant Doctor with crystalline structure and an unashamed juicy texture. The finish is tight, very long and tensioned as well as highly promising. Tased in March 2019. ... More details

Exuberant and aromatic, this spry, light-footed Spätlese offers a heady introduction of orange blossom, pineapple and yellow cherry perfume. It's juicy and concentrated with sweet-tart peach and guava flavors adorned by a filigreed veil of sweetness. Lovely already but should intensify through 2035.

Still quite shy, this is a really succulent Spätlese with a lot of apricot character and considerable depth. Quite a dry finish. Drink or hold.

Rated 91 by Wine Spectator
Golden in color and velvety in texture, this is very ripe for the category, with saffron, cream and coriander notes underscoring mirabelle plum and quince paste flavors. Lacks finesse, but remains balanced and concentrated. A crowd-pleaser. Drink now through 2028. 28 cases imported.

Varietal: Riesling

Riesling grapes are very rarely blended with others in the development of wines, and for good reason. These pale grapes which originated in the cool Rhine Valley of Germany are notable for their 'transparency' of flavor, which allows the characteristics of their terroir to shine through in wonderful ways. The result of this is a wine which carries a wide range of interesting flavors quite unlike those found in other white wines, finished off with the distinctively floral perfume Riesling supplies so well. Many wineries in Germany and elsewhere tend to harvest their Riesling grapes very late – often as late as January – in order to make the most of their natural sweetness. Other methods, such as encouraging the noble rot fungus, help the Riesling grape varietal present some truly unique and exciting flavors in the glass, and the variety of wines this varietal can produce mean it is one of the finest and most interesting available anywhere.

Country: Germany

Despite being known primarily for sweet and semi-sweet white wines, Germany actually produces a surprisingly large and varied range of wines, with many reaching an extremely high standard and being very well received on the world stage. The terrain across much of the southern parts of the country is extremely fertile, with mineral rich soils adding a wonderful edge to already excellent grapes, and thus resulting in delicious and highly elegant white and rosé wines. The climate in many parts of Germany also allows for some more unusual wine-making practices, with certain regions specializing in the highly aromatic and distinctive 'ice-wines' which are gaining popularity by those looking for something a little more intense and unusual. With these wines, the producers allow the grapes to freeze through the early frosts, resulting in a higher sugar content and a fantastic set of flavors and aromas in the finished product. Germany has long since favored quality over quantity, and a new enthusiasm for fine wine within the country is producing truly exciting results, using a blending of traditional and contemporary techniques.
