With fruit from Castiglione Falletto, the Boroli 2017 Barolo Villero opens to dark fruit and some savory notes of tilled earth and licorice. What you notice first is the shiny intensity of the wine's appearance. The fruit tones are followed by some spice and cedar that come from the oak aging, but otherwise this wine is well balanced and open-knit. Some 5,500 bottles will be released this upcoming September.

The 2017 Villero from the Boroli family is rather oak dominated. Limpid dried cherry fruit with rose and peppery aromas is supported by firm tannins with huge mid-palate extraction and oaky flavours, leading to a liquorice finish. Although modern in style, the oak is well judged and will integrate with the intense fruit in time.

Aromas of dark spice, pressed rose and coconut form the nose along with a whiff of camphor. The tightly-knit, full-bodied palate also has elegance and tension, featuring ripe Marasca cherry, blood orange and intense licorice notes alongside firm, fine-grained tannins. After making significant changes in the vineyard and the cellars over the years, this shows the firm's a commitment to making more terroir-driven wines with respect to previous vintages. Drink 2025–2032.

Marked by vanilla, toast and a hint of coconut flavors, this red also delivers cherry, plum, menthol and leather notes. Lively and firm, with an extended finish. Best from 2024 through 2035. 450 cases made, 100 cases imported.

Clear bright ruby colour with very light garnet red reflections; intense and persistent aroma of red fruit with notes of plum and cherry. A pleasant aroma of wood is noticeable after the fruity aroma, anticipating the full taste of a great wine suitable for long lasting life. A succulent, rich, full-bodied and pleasant taste emerges after the woody one, with the presence of slightly ripe red fruit.

Varietal: Nebbiolo

The dusty purple grapes of the Nebbiolo variety are widely considered to be amongst the finest in the world, and hold many unique characteristics which have secured their place in wine making history. Indeed, almost all of the most respected and sought after red wines of Italy are made using this grape varietal, and it wasn't long before several New World wineries started experimenting with the fruit of this special vine, too. Nebbiolo grapes are renowned for their ability to age beautifully, with their strong and dense tannins mellowing out and becoming more balanced inside the oak. Alongside this, they hold some of the most complex and exciting flavors to be found in any grape, which range from gorgeous notes of black truffle, to aromatic violets and tobacco tones.

The region is dominated by the mighty Alps which form the border between Italy, France and Switzerland, and the Moscato grapes that are grown in the foothills of this mountain range carry much of the Alps' flavors in their fruit, and are fed by crystal clear mountain waters. However, it is the Nebbiolo, Dolcetto and Barbera grapes which are the real stars of this region, and the highly respected wineries which cover much of Piedmont have generations of experience when it comes to processing and aging these grape varietals to produce the superb wines which come out of appellations such as Barolo and Barberesco.
