The 2019 Syrah Granite is a step up from the Schist Syrah, delivering much more intensity on the nose, where clove and black pepper notes, animal fur and a touch of autumn bonfire infuse the black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, good acidity, gentle grip, and fine depth toward the finish. Spicebox, white pepper and clove abound, showing very good persistency on the finish. This is a wonderful Syrah from Chris and Andrea Mullineux.

A compact, creamy red, with broad shoulders and sculpted tannins tightly meshed with flavors of bitter cherry and currant, crushed peppercorn, dried lavender, graphite and stony mineral. Not a powerhouse wine, this instead carries its stature gracefully as the flavor range expands and lingers on the palate. Best from 2024 through 2034. 224 cases made, 15 cases imported.
Winery
This floral perfumed Syrah is the most elegant of our single-terroir Syrahs. The palate is medium to full bodied and delicately spicy, with a silky texture balanced by a fresh, natural acidity. There are notes of black pepper, violets and lilies, red berries and herbs. With the very gentle oak integration, the elegance and length of tannin in this wine it beckons ageing of 15 to 25 years. Decanting is recommended when opened young.

Varietal: Syrah

There are few red wine grape varietals in the world quite as versatile as that of the Shiraz/Syrah vine. These powerful darkly colored grapes are responsible for several wildly popular wines, and are used in the production of still, fortified and sparkling wines, all which carry its magnificent strong flavors very well indeed. This grape varietal is a robust one, easily adaptable to several different climates and terroirs, and yet has a strong ability to express the conditions it is grown in when it ferments and is drank. Most typically, Shiraz/Syrah wines are known for spicy flavors with a big fruity punch, and the fact that they can demonstrate the decisions made by the winemakers in their secondary flavors very clearly.

Region: Coastal Region

Coastal South Africa has long been recognized as a vitally important global wine region, and was probably the first 'New World' country to produce wines of an exceptionally high quality. Indeed, in the late 18th century, wines from in and around Cape Town were regarded as amongst the best wines on earth, and were adored for their exoticism and big, fruity flavors Today, the South African wine industry is booming, and wineries are appearing each year along the sun drenched and windy oceanic coastline. Many grape varietals are now grown in the region, however, Chenin Blanc remains the country's flagship varietal, with over eighteen percent of vineyards in the country used for this particular grape, closely followed by Cabernet Sauvignon and Colombard.

Country: South Africa

Perhaps the most famous and well respected of all the wine regions in South Africa is that of Constantia, which holds many of the oldest and most traditional wineries in the country. Here, the temperate climate receives the Atlantic winds which cool the vineyards, and the fertile soil allows the grapes to grow to full ripeness, resulting in highly flavorful wines which are enjoyed around the world. Whilst Sauvignon Blanc varietals make up the most widely exported wines of this region, the rest of the country produces a huge and impressive range of wines, made up from varietals native to many different European countries. From excellent Champagne style sparkling wines, to aromatic fortified examples, fruity reds and refreshing whites, South Africa continues to impress and surprise, with modern techniques and technologies leading the way and producing exceptional results.
