The 2019 Pinot Noir Horseshoe Vineyard is one of the most powerful, structured wines in this lineup. It has so much to offer, but very clearly needs quiet a bit of time. Strong mineral and savory accents drive the balance today. Crushed rocks, tobacco, cedar and earthy notes are very much in the foreground, while the fruit appears quite reticent at this stage. The 2019 Pinot Noir Horseshoe Vineyard is one of the most powerful, structured wines in this lineup. It has so much to offer, but very clearly needs quiet a bit of time. Strong mineral and savory accents drive the balance today. Crushed rocks, tobacco, cedar and earthy notes are very much in the foreground, while the fruit appears quite reticent at this stage. The 2019 Pinot Noir Horseshoe Vineyard is more reductive and hard to read, with lots of iodine, crushed stone, savory herbs, and assorted darker berry fruits. As with most of these latest 2019s from Rhys, it shows a more structured, savory. medium-bodied style that's going to benefit from bottle age but have 10-15 years of overall longevity.

• Practicing Biodynamic. • 100% Pinot Noir. • Horseshoe Vineyard (Santa Cruz Mountains AVA). • Elevation 1450-1610ft • Aspect: East, South and West. • Slope: 10-25%. • Soil: Monterey Shale – 18”-24” rocky topsoil. • 100% destemmed. • Fermented in stainless steel fermenters. • 5-day cold soaked. • Aged 17-18 months total with 12 months on the lees in barrel. • 40% new oak (Francois Freres custom barrels, 4 yr seasoning, med to med+ toast). • 35 barrels(225L) produced.

Varietal: Pinot Noir

Whilst the Pinot Noir grape varietal has its origins in France, and is most closely associated with fine Burgundy wines, it is now grown in almost every wine producing country in the world. There are many reasons for this – the densely packed, deep black bunches of fruits are responsible for making a wide variety of excellent wines, generally agreed to be amongst the most drinkable and accessible one can find. With flavors ranging from currants and red and black berries, to more earthy, spicy notes, Pinot Noir is a versatile varietal which is revered for its relatively light body and beautifully vivid red color However, the grapes themselves are notoriously susceptible to various diseases, and struggle in fluctuating climates. This has not stopped wineries planting and cultivating these vines, though, as Pinot Noir, when grown carefully and treated properly, is a grape with a wide and increasing fan-base, and more often than not produces wonderful wines.
