A gorgeously complex and intensely spicy nose offers up notes of plum, cassis, black cherry, dried rose petal and sandalwood. The silky, supple and energetic middle weight flavors possess a highly sophisticated mouth feel that is enhanced by the notably fine-grained tannins that appear on the caressing and harmonious finale that delivers simply marvelous length. This too is going to need ample time but in contrast to some of the bigger and more powerful wines in the range, this should be approachable after only 7 to 8 years of cellaring.

A Journal is an old Burgundian measurement for just under one acre. From a portion of this Grand Cru vineyard, this wine is perfumed, powerful and has great concentration. Already it is showing dark fruits, ripe plum and good texture. Acidity cuts through the wine, giving a great lift at the end. Drink from 2022. (Cellar Selection)

This elegant version exudes black currant, cherry, boysenberry and spice flavors, tinged by violet hints. Though lean and taut, this finishes long, with grainy tannins coming to the fore. Should unwind nicely in two to three years. Best from 2019 through 2035. 290 cases made.

Our Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru "Les Quatre Journaux" 2014 has a deep ruby colour. Its nose offers aromas of mocha, blackcurrant and grilled almond. Its mouth, ample and fresh, reveals notes of almond, blackcurrant and sap. Nice persistence.

Whilst the Pinot Noir grape varietal has its origins in France, and is most closely associated with fine Burgundy wines, it is now grown in almost every wine producing country in the world. There are many reasons for this – the densely packed, deep black bunches of fruits are responsible for making a wide variety of excellent wines, generally agreed to be amongst the most drinkable and accessible one can find. With flavors ranging from currants and red and black berries, to more earthy, spicy notes, Pinot Noir is a versatile varietal which is revered for its relatively light body and beautifully vivid red color However, the grapes themselves are notoriously susceptible to various diseases, and struggle in fluctuating climates. This has not stopped wineries planting and cultivating these vines, though, as Pinot Noir, when grown carefully and treated properly, is a grape with a wide and increasing fan-base, and more often than not produces wonderful wines.

The region of Burgundy itself has a wine-making history which stretches back at least two thousand years, and as such, it comes as no surprise that the wineries which fill the dozens of controlled appellations of the region rely heavily on traditional methods and techniques when it comes to producing their famous wines.
