Another second wine from this estate that's more in the style of the grand vin, the 2017 Les Griffons De Pichon Baron is 52% Cabernet Sauvignon and 48% Merlot brought up in 50% new French oak. This inky hued effort offers a serious, ageworthy style that's going to benefit from age. Lots of blackcurrants, tobacco leaf, lead pencil, shavings, chocolate, and a touch of minerality all define the bouquet. Concentrated, medium to full-bodied, and beautifully textured, it's a rocking second wine that will have two decades or more of life. ... More details

91-93 Barrel Sample. This is a smoky wine, with juicy acidity and spice. Packed with fruit as well as some firm tannins in the background, this is rich and shows good aging ability. Tannins and juicy black fruits show strongly at the end.

A pretty wine with medium to full body, round and creamy tannins and a flavorful finish. Shows plenty of currant and raspberry character with an attractive, stony mineral note underneath. Try after 2022.

Generous black fruit on the nose, brooding and sultry with violet nuances. Spicy on the palate, with minty touches. Light and refreshing.

The 2017 Les Griffons de Pichon-Baron is a powerful, serious wine endowed with tremendous character and personality. It is especially somber in this vintage, with tannins that need time to soften. The oak is very nicely balanced now after élevage and bottling, and the wine has plenty of textural density and richness to match. Dark fruit, chocolate, spice and wild flowers build into the sumptuous finish.

89-91 The Cabernet Sauvignon-based expression of Pichon Baron’s second wine contains 52% Cabernet Sauvignon and 48% Merlot. Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2017 Les Griffons de Pichon Baron has expressive notes of cassis, crushed black cherries and black raspberries with hints of lavender, underbrush, Provence herbs and tilled soil. The palate is medium-bodied and incredibly elegant with great freshness and very fine tannins, finishing earthy.

Features a soft-edged but juicy feel, with a mix of plum and black currant fruit melded to sweet tobacco and warm iron notes. Shows nice viscosity on the finish. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Drink now through 2028. 7,500 cases made.
Winery
The nose is delicate, with notes of black fruits and a hint of subtle, well-integrated wood. The palate is generous and full, with powerful and luscious tannins. The balance is rich and harmonious with tension. The finish is racy and refreshingly long. A wine for laying down, which reflects the terroir and expresses the year’s full potential.

Varietal: Red Bordeaux

The Bordeaux region of France consistently enjoys the reputation of being the finest region for wine making in the world. But what is it that makes this area around the Gironde river so special? The secret lies in their ancient and careful blend of no more than six high quality, flavorful and unique grape varietals. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Carménere are all permitted for usage in the production of Bordeaux wines, and the winery carefully considers how to balance the fine points of one varietal against another. Most commonly, Cabernet Sauvignon is used as the main grape varietal, usually with vintners making wines containing upwards of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon grape juices. This varietal lends its big, spicy, fruity flavors and astringent, tannin-heavy character to the mix. Normally, this strong varietal is then tempered and rounded by Merlot, a fleshy, fruity and far lighter bodied grape, containing far fewer tannins and a much brighter flavor The blended wines are normally left to age in oak, where they can continue to work together and produce their wonderful results.

Region: Bordeaux

The wineries of Bordeaux in France are widely considered to be amongst the finest on earth, with many of the chateaux found on the Left Bank and in the Médoc region routinely demanding enormous prices and being snapped up by collectors looking to add the best examples of the world's white and red wines to their cellars. Bordeaux's secret to success comes from the fact that the terroir of the region is exceptionally rich in minerals, helped by the clay and gravel soils which typify the area and the Gironde river which runs through it. Normally humid in climate, the nearby Atlantic coast supplies cooling breezes, making Bordeaux a winemaker's dream and resulting in extremely high quality grape varietals. For hundreds of years, the wineries of Bordeaux have been mastering the art of wine blending, and today produce a wide range of wine styles using many of the sixteen grape varietals permitted to grow in the region by French law.

Country: France

France is renowned across the globe for its quality wines and the careful expertise which goes into making them, but what is truly remarkable about this relatively small country is the vast range of wines it produces in such huge amounts each year. Not only are the finest red wines in the world said to come from the beautiful regions of Bordeaux and Burgundy, but elsewhere in the country we find the Champagne region, and areas such as the Rhone Valley and the Loire, whose white wines consistently receive awards and accolades by the plenty. This range is a result of the great variety of climatic conditions and terrain found in France, coupled with generations of wine makers working within single appellations. Their knowledge of specific terroirs and grape varieties has, over time, perfected the production of wines within their region, and the end results continue to impress the world to this day.
