A blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc that was brought up in 50% new barrels, the 2017 La Gravette De Certan is a smoking second wine from unquestionably one of the top estates in Pomerol. Loaded with notions of dark, chocolatey fruits, leafy herbs, and violets, it has more richness and depth on the palate than most estates’ top wine. Medium to full-bodied and textured, with sweet tannins, it's well worth seeking out and will evolve for two decades. ... More details

This is really delicious now with chocolate, tobacco, spice, and cedar. Full body, firm and silky tannins and a delicious finish. Pure. Easy, yet complex. Second wine of Vieux Château Certan. Drink now. Enjoy!

Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2017 La Gravette de Certan leaps from the glass with exuberant scents of blueberry preserves, blackberry compote and black cherries with hints of violets, menthol, chocolate box and aniseed. Medium-bodied, the palate has a generous amount of expressive blue and black fruit flavors, framed by ripe, rounded tannins and seamless freshness, finishing long and fragrant.

The 2017 La Gravette de Certan, made from the estate's young vines (under 25 years of age) is soft, open-knit and inviting. In this vintage, the Gravette is especially floral and perfumed, which gives it tons of immediacy and sheer appeal. Rose petal, sweet red berries, licorice and mint are all laced into the very pretty, nuanced finish. I would prefer to drink the 2017 over the next decade or so.

The second wine of Vieux Château Certan, this is produced from young vines. Still with plenty of tannins, it has structure although the fruit is already beginning to shine through. It offers spice and good acidity, and is likely to be ready from 2022.
Wine Spectator
Gently mulled black cherry and plum fruit is infused with black tea and warm vanilla bean accents, melding nicely with the fruit on the finish. Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink now through 2025. 1,500 cases made.

Varietal: Red Bordeaux

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act – the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

Region: Bordeaux

The wineries of Bordeaux in France are widely considered to be amongst the finest on earth, with many of the chateaux found on the Left Bank and in the Médoc region routinely demanding enormous prices and being snapped up by collectors looking to add the best examples of the world's white and red wines to their cellars. Bordeaux's secret to success comes from the fact that the terroir of the region is exceptionally rich in minerals, helped by the clay and gravel soils which typify the area and the Gironde river which runs through it. Normally humid in climate, the nearby Atlantic coast supplies cooling breezes, making Bordeaux a winemaker's dream and resulting in extremely high quality grape varietals. For hundreds of years, the wineries of Bordeaux have been mastering the art of wine blending, and today produce a wide range of wine styles using many of the sixteen grape varietals permitted to grow in the region by French law.
