There's richness and amplitude to the forest berry fruits, blackberry, raspberry, blackcurrant bush. Amplitude on the palate too, this is very generous, mouthfilling, with enough acidity to meet the alcohol, which doesn't feel excessive. Tannins are much more rounded and buffed compared to the Coudoulet. There's a good sense of freshness, it feels quite dynamic on the palate for such a concentrated, structured vintage of Beaucastel; the Mourvèdre really makes itself known. Very good, but still very young; I would hold until 2027 before opening, though there's certainly pleasure to be had now. 30% Mourvèdre, 30% Grenache, 15% Syrah, 10% Counoise, 15% Vaccarèse, Terret Noir, Muscardin, Clairette, Picpoul Blanc, Picardan, Bourboulenc, Roussanne and Cinsault. Grenache and Cinsault fermented in cement, Syrah and Mourvèdre fermented in foudre. ... More details

The full-bodied, dense 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape seems a bit closed at the moment, but Asian five spice powder still brings plenty of complexity and nuance to the rich, dark fruit aromas and flavors. Multidimensional, layered and long, this is another terrific vintage for Beaucastel's main cuvée, perhaps falling just slightly behind the 2016 and 2018.

A dark and winey style, offering a mix of plum, black currant and black cherry notes, infused with black tea, fruitcake and anise accents. Solidly built, vibrant and energetic from start to finish, this carries copious fruit easily through the lengthy finish. Grenache, Cinsault, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Counoise. Best from 2020 through 2040. 3,500 cases imported.

The 2017 Châteauneuf Du Pape is another sunny, beautifully Provençal effort that has a huge nose of garrigue, raw steak, leather, truffle, and peppery spice. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated, and balanced, it’s not a massive Beaucastel yet it has a classic, Provençal, incredibly satisfying style that will benefit from 4-6 years of bottle age and keep for two decades.

Saturated ruby. Displays aromas of ripe, spice-tinged blueberry, cherry and blackberry, along with building suggestions of game, potpourri and sandalwood. Offers concentrated black and blue fruit, exotic spice, licorice and floral pastille flavors that show unlikely energy for their heft. Dusty tannins build through a very long, smoky finish that strongly echoes the dark berry and floral notes.
Winery
Colour: Dark and deep ruby with purple undertones. Nose: Very rich with ripe black fruit, cherry, fig and slightly smoky. Mouth: Round and powerful, great balance between the tannins and the body, with notes of red fruit.

Region: Rhone Valley

The southern French wine region of the Rhone Valley has been home to wine-makers for over two thousand years, with the first grapevines of the region being cultivated in around 600 BCE when the ancient Greeks arrived with their knowledge of viticulture and eagerness to produce more wine. Today, the region is famed around the world for the excellence of its produce, and has dozens of wineries making the most of the wide range of grape varietals which flourish there. In the northern sub-region, the continental climate and brisk winds coming off the Central Massif allow wineries to grow a smaller range of varietals – predominantly Syrah, Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier, whereas the southern, more Mediterranean sub-region allows far more range. Here, dozens of varietals are grown for the production of white, red and rosé wines, all packed full of flavor and able to express the unique terroir they are grown on.

Country: France

French winemakers are subjected to several laws and regulations regarding the wines they produce, and how they can be labeled and sold. Such procedures are designed to increase the overall quality of the country's produce, and also to ensure that wines made in each particular region or appellation are of a character and type which is representative of the area. Thankfully for consumers of wine world-wide, the French have a particularly high reputation to uphold, and seem to do so flawlessly. Every year, wineries from all over France produce millions upon millions of bottles of fine wine, making the most of their native grape varieties and the excellent terrain which covers most of the country. From the expensive and exquisite red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy, to the white wines and cremants of central France, the French are dedicated to providing the world with wines of the highest quality and most distinctive character.
