Bottled in April of this, the 2021 Châteauneuf Du Pape clearly ranks with the crème de la crème of the vintage and has more depth, concentration, and texture than most. Black raspberries, Provençal herbs, ground pepper, and assorted spices define the aromatics, and it's medium to full-bodied, has a focused, elegant mouthfeel, beautiful tannins, and a great finish. It's not massive and plays in the elegant, fresher style of the vintage, but it's utterly beguiling with its complexity and nuance. Drink bottles any time over the coming 10-15 years. ... Mouthcoating ripe fruit, the alcohol is high but it's balanced out by the driving acidity. The tannins aren't the finest, but it has concentration and thrust. Has the presence and power of a classic Châteauneuf, which can be lacking in this vintage. Long finish. This cuvée replaces the three historical red cuvées of the domaine (Classique, Auguste Favier and Charles Giraud). From the galets roulés of lieu-dit Les Serres, fermented in concrete, aged in concrete, old oak and amphora.

Just a notch below the 2020, the 2021 Châteauneuf-du-Pape incorporates lively aromas of redcurrant, raspberry, forest strawberry, tomato leaf, licorice, dried thyme and a splash of mint. It is a medium to full-bodied red that's rich and refined, framed by velvety tannins and fresh acidity. The finish is nice and long.

Tauter and crisper than usual, the 2021 Chateauneuf du Pape features strawberry and cherry fruit. Mainly Grenache, with smaller portions of Cinsault, Syrah and Mourvèdre, it's medium to full-bodied, framed by silky tannins and ending with a gently dusty feel. Note: this includes fruit that formerly went into the Reserve Auguste Favier and Collection Charles Giraud bottlings. It wasn't an easy vintage here in 2021.

Region: Rhone Valley

The southern French wine region of the Rhone Valley has been home to wine-makers for over two thousand years, with the first grapevines of the region being cultivated in around 600 BCE when the ancient Greeks arrived with their knowledge of viticulture and eagerness to produce more wine. Today, the region is famed around the world for the excellence of its produce, and has dozens of wineries making the most of the wide range of grape varietals which flourish there. In the northern sub-region, the continental climate and brisk winds coming off the Central Massif allow wineries to grow a smaller range of varietals – predominantly Syrah, Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier, whereas the southern, more Mediterranean sub-region allows far more range. Here, dozens of varietals are grown for the production of white, red and rosé wines, all packed full of flavor and able to express the unique terroir they are grown on.

Country: France

France is renowned across the globe for its quality wines and the careful expertise which goes into making them, but what is truly remarkable about this relatively small country is the vast range of wines it produces in such huge amounts each year. Not only are the finest red wines in the world said to come from the beautiful regions of Bordeaux and Burgundy, but elsewhere in the country we find the Champagne region, and areas such as the Rhone Valley and the Loire, whose white wines consistently receive awards and accolades by the plenty. This range is a result of the great variety of climatic conditions and terrain found in France, coupled with generations of wine makers working within single appellations. Their knowledge of specific terroirs and grape varieties has, over time, perfected the production of wines within their region, and the end results continue to impress the world to this day.
