Soldera's next release is the 2009 Toscana Sangiovese, which is still in cask. The raciness, warmth and overall intensity of the year come through in a powerful, structured wine that still needs time to fully come together. The tannins remain quite imposing, but I am inclined to think the 2009 will open up earlier than is typically the case here. We will see. I remember visiting Case Basse in the summer of 2009, a few weeks before this fruit was harvested. It is fascinating to taste the 2009 again from cask, a few months before it goes into bottle. There is a lot of mystery and mystique surrounding the current wine program spearheaded by Gianfranco Soldera. According to the latest information I have, Case Basse produced 36 hectoliters of IGT wine in 2009, only four hectoliters in 2010, 17 hectoliters in 2011, 124 hectoliters in 2012, 127 hectoliters in 2013 and 68 hectoliters in 2014. Given those radically inconsistent production numbers, I suspect we won't see this wine in retail again until the 2012 vintage is released. On the market now, you might find the 2009 100% Sangiovese if you are extremely lucky. This is by far the vintage I prefer most since this pure expression of Sangiovese lost its Brunello di Montalcino status. As an IGT, the wine is streamlined and silky. Fruit flavors of wild cherry, dried apple and aniseed are radiant and glossy. The wine packs mild volatile acidity that adds to its aromatic intensity and presentation. This vintage gives me cause to believe in the cult of Soldera.

The wine presents a vivid garnet red color and is characterized by a high spherical perception and persistency. It possesses a noticeable aroma intensity, mainly due to fruity and floral aroma. Astringency and structure are quite well perceived.

Vintage: 2009

Despite less than ideal climatic conditions, featuring storms which threatened an otherwise perfect year, most parts of California had an excellent year for viticulture. Chardonnays and Sauvignon Blancs were picked at optimum ripeness, and Californian white wine was just about as good as it could be. Surprises and overcoming difficulties summed up much of the United States' wine industry in 2009, and many of the results from Oregon, Washington State and all over California speak for themselves, with the flagship Cabernet Sauvignon grapes having developed healthy, thick skins and thus plenty of character and distinction. Elsewhere in the New World, South Africa had a very good year in 2009, and wineries across the cape of the African continent are proclaiming it a truly great vintage. In most of Europe, fine weather and punctual ripening periods produced some excellent wines, with many of the best coming out of France's Bordeaux and the surrounding regions. Merlot had an exceptionally good year in France, and wineries are proclaiming that the 2009 Merlot harvest was one of the best in living memory. Indeed, across most of France, ripening was relatively even, and red wine grapes such as Cabernet Franc, Syrah and others were reportedly highly characterful, with plenty of the required tannin levels with which to make high quality wines. Italy, too, had a very good 2009. Piedmont reported extremely favorable conditions throughout 2009, and their signature Nebbiolo grapes were more or less perfect when harvested, having benefited from the slight drop in temperature at the end of their ripening period. Veneto, too, had an enviable year, producing superb Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay wines in 2009.

Wines made with the round, darkly colored Sangiovese grape varietal tend to demonstrate the grape's key attributes: high acidity, moderate tannins and pale red color These grapes have been grown in their native Italy for thousands of years, and are said to be one of the key varietals which were so loved by the ancient Etruscan and Roman civilization Fast forward a few millennia, and all over the world, wineries are still growing these grapes in order to capture that renowned and flavorful essence. What makes Sangiovese so loved by drinkers and vintners alike is its wonderful ability to soak up the earthy, woody flavors of the oak barrels they are aged in, and present these in the glass alongside fresh, bright summer fruit notes. Whilst Sangiovese grapes are often blended during the fermentation process, they are also drank as single variety wines, both young and fresh, and aged and complex.

This region is currently Italy's third largest producer of wines, but interestingly wineries here are generally happy with lower yields holding higher quality grapes, believing that they have a responsibility to uphold the excellent reputation of Tuscany, rather than let it slip into 'quantity over quality' wine-making as it did in the mid twentieth century. The region has a difficult soil type to work with, but the excellent climate and generations of expertise more than make up for this problem. Most commonly, Tuscan vintners grow Sangiovese and Vernaccia varietal grapes, although more and more varietals are being planted nowadays in order to produce other high quality wine styles.
