This wine is produced from eight parcels of the original steep and south-facing cru, which is open to the wind, and fermented separately in oak vats of different seizes (from 228 to 2,400 liters). Tement's intensely lemon-colored Sauvignon Blanc 2020 Ried Zieregg GSTK offers a deep and complex, very intense, rich and generously aromatic but always precise, fresh and mineral-backboned (even iodine-inflected) bouquet of concentrated lemon aromas, lemongrass and liquid limestones. Dense and elegant on the palate, with tropical fruit aromas and a perfectly integrated acidity/tannin complex, this is a tight, tense, stimulating and fresh Zieregg that is the most complete and generous 2020 of all Ziereggs. Less sophisticated perhaps than Kår or Steilriegel but even more generously textured than the Pinot Blanc, the 2020 Zieregg caresses the palate before it gives it and your brain a job to do. The wine is very salivating, sensual but also intellectual, with a lemon-bitter finish. A great wine and one of the finest Ziereggs in history. Highly recommended. 13.5% stated alcohol. Glass stopper. Tasted at the Zieregg in May 2023. ... More details

Deep nose that’s very smoky and flinty, with candied-lemon and minty aromas. Very concentrated for such a cool and sleek chardonnay, also very focused with a very tightly wound tannin structure. So much chalky and lemony freshness drive the imposing and vibrant finish. Enormous aging potential! From organically grown grapes. Sustainable. Drink or hold. Glass stopper.
Winery
Ried Zieregg is perhaps Tement's most well-known wine. Zieregg is classified as a Grosse Lage or grand cru. Tement has 16 parcels in the Zieregg vineyard, 13 of which are planted to Sauvignon Blanc, and the sites are characterized by steep slopes, old vines, and coralline limestone. Like all of the Tement wines, the fermentation is spontaneous and natural. The wine is aged for 20 months on the lees in big, neutral oak casks. Bottled unfiltered.

green grapes

Varietal: Sauvignon Blanc

Sauvignon Blanc grapes originated in France, where they are still widely grown today and treated to a wide range of processing practices – from aging in oak barrels, blending with other varietals, and undergoing malolactic fermentation to encourage a more mellow, buttery finish. These green skinned white wine grapes are highly versatile, and are now grown in several countries around the world which have the correct climatic conditions for getting the best results from them. Generally, Sauvignon Blanc varietal grapes prefer a cooler climate, as too much heat dulls the flavor present in the fruit. As such, they are generally grown in valleys and on coastal areas, where they can benefit from cooling breezes before being typically harvested early in the summer. The grapes themselves produce wines which are often very dry and crisp, yet full of a wide range of flavors including grasses, tropical fruits and citrus notes.

Country: Austria

For over four thousand years, Austria has been home to some of Europe's finest wines, with a strong domestic wine industry which is beginning to be once again recognized for its world class quality. All over the eastern part of the country, and even in the capital, Vienna, small wineries are working with the grape varietals which flourish in the country's hot summer climate and mineral rich soils, fed by the Danube and other great rivers which cross the flat lands of this part of Austria. Most commonly, wineries work with the Grüner Veltliner grapes which grow so well here, and produce the dry and elegant white wines which typify Austria's viticultural produce. However, many other fine grape varietals are grown and used for a wide range of wine styles, including some extremely interesting sweet white wines similar to those found in neighboring Hungary.
