The 2021 Garnacha de Viña Bonita is pure Garnacha from a plot of very old vines planted in 1929 on very shallow and compact granite soils at 735 meters in altitude with north-facing exposure. It is always subtle and elegant. It fermented with 8% full clusters and indigenous yeasts in oak vats for over six weeks and matured in two well-seasoned 600-liter oak barrels. This has very low alcohol, 13%, lower than in other years, and the wine feels more delicate and fine-boned, floral and ethereal. The palate shows elegance and refinement, with the backbone of granite minerality that lifts it up. It has good freshness and balance that give it length. 1,500 bottles produced. It was bottled in April 2023. ... More details

Winery
Viña Bonita is an 80 year old vineyard on the top of the hill of the property at 700 m. Its soil is a thin layer of compacted granite; cultivators frequently scratch the bedrock. The parcel covers 2.8 hectares, and its planting density is 2,200 vines per hectare. Vinification takes place in wooden tanks. Bernabeleva Viña Bonita has the longest maceration of all our wines. Malolactic fermentation takes place in 225 l French oak barriques, where the wine remains as long as necessary.

green grapes

Varietal: Grenache

The Grenache grape varietal has its origins in the dry and arid regions of central Spain, where it continues to thrive to this day under the blazing sun of this region. However, its popularity and versatility has meant that these purple skinned grapes have spread all over the Old and New World and have become of the most widely planted grape varietals on earth. The tightly bunched, round fruit of the Grenache vine can be rigorous and prodigious in the correct conditions, but is often struggling against various types of rot and mildew. Thanks to modern techniques for avoiding such problems, Grenache grape farmers now enjoy strong and high quality yields which they can use to produce the distinctive light bodied and spicy wines associated with this grape.

Country: Spain

Ever since the Phoenicians and Romans brought their knowledge of vine cultivation to Spanish soils, the country's culture has grown alongside wine production, with wine being a vital part of Spanish identity and Spanish traditions. Each region of Spain has a wine quite distinct from the others, and it is produced by smallholders and families as much as it is by large companies and established wineries. From the relatively mild and lush regions of La Rioja to the arid plateaus that surround Madrid, grapes are grown in abundance for the now booming Spanish wine industry, and new laws and regulations have recently been put in place to keep the country's standards high. By combining traditional practices with modern technology, Spanish wineries are continuing to produce distinctive wines of great character, flavor and aroma, with the focus shifting in recent decades to quality over quantity.
