The 2018 Huilkrans is 100% Chenin Blanc from the Citrusdal Mountains. Its bouquet is more waxy and resinous than Alheit’s other 2018s, but no less compelling. Discreet scents of granite and shale emerge with continued aeration. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, crisp and poised, with a lick of salinity toward the finish, and mango and dried pineapple toward the persistent, pixelated finish. This is another killer wine from Chris Alheit. ... More details

Pale lemon in hue, the 2018 Hulikrans explodes from the glass in waves of expression, offering seductive aromas of lemon-almond tart, raw honeycomb, white spiced tea, yellow apple skin and elements of Meyer lemon and sea spray. Medium-bodied, the wine splashes down on the palate with an amazing mouthfeel, mineral tension and energetic acidity with a growing spiciness across the mid-palate. The wine is impeccably balanced, showing the incredible depth and versatility that Chenin Blanc possesses, bursting with layers of soft, nutty and funky tones, bright, energetic acidity and stretched mineral essence. The wine grows spicier on the finish and continues to evolve for more than a minute, flipping back and forth between flavors of sautéed nuts, citrus zest and hints of dried caramel. There is no choice; I must finish this glass. I highly recommended it to every Chenin Blanc lover out there. Bravo!

This stunning white is expressive, yet intense acidity imparts fine harmony and precision. Nectarine and blood orange flavors are backed by lemongrass and salty elements that create tension. This gains intensity midpalate before winding down and finding equilibrium on the finish. Wait several years for this to come together and you'll be in for a treat. Best from 2023 through 2033. 30 cases imported.

green grapes

Varietal: Chenin Blanc

The green skinned grapes of the Chenin Blanc varietal are used for a wide range of different wines. In their native home of France, they are used for the production of some excellent sparkling crémants, or allowed to develop noble rot, which intensifies their natural sweetness and produces some unusual and intense flavors In most countries around the world, though, Chenin Blanc grapes are used for the production of high quality still white wines, which have the ability to express the finer features of the terroir they are grown on. Many winemakers like to age their Chenin Blanc wines in oak or chestnut barrels, which adds an extra layer of complexity to the wines. These grapes thrive best in heavy clay soils, and ripen late in the season, when their natural flavors can come through fully.

Region: Coastal Region

The coastal region of South Africa is a wonderful place for viticulture. With gorgeously long, hot summer days, tempered by brisk oceanic winds, the grapevines can grow healthily, the fruit can ripen fully, and beautiful wines of great character and flavor can be made. For several hundred years now, the coastal region of South Africa has proven itself to be a highly important wine region, capable of supporting many grape varietals, suitable for still, fortified and sparkling wines. Today, the most popular grapes by far are Chenin Blanc, which produces the most recognizable wines of South Africa. However, also popular are many of the Bordeaux varieties of red and white grape, along with relative newcomers, such as Pinotage, which grow exceptionally well in the coastal terroir.

Country: South Africa

As geographically diverse country, with everything from lush green valleys to areas of arid desert, mountainsides and river estuaries, South Africa unsurprisingly produces a huge range of excellent wines. Regions such as the Breede River Valley consistently impress with their Semillon wines and the lush, fruity Ruby Cabernets grown and processed here, and the cooler region of Overberg is attracting much attention as a result of their silky Pinot Noir bottles. However, all over the oceanic tip of this fascinating country, traditional methods dating back over three hundred years are combining with modern technologies to produce some of the finest examples of New World wines to be found anywhere on the globe.
