Rondevlei vineyard was planted in 1984, and 2021 is the first single-vineyard wine from this plot. A quarter of the wine was aged in concrete egg. Greg Sherwood MW: A very serious, grown-up Chenin showing dusty granitic minerality, a hint of stony reduction but also pristine purity, white peach and green apple vibrancy, with a sophisticated finish. Beverley Blanning MW: Smoky, intense nose. Restrained and mineral, with excellent precision and beautifully savoury fruit. A super-stylish Chenin for the long term, but this is highly enjoyable now. Roger Jones: Melon, ginger syrup, gentle herbs, immense purity. Delicate white peach and nectarine peel, hints of poached Williams pear. It’s complex, layered and still evolving. ... More details

Aromas of sliced pears, green apples, dried lemon peel. Medium-bodied with supple, gentle texture. Elegant and nuanced on the palate showing lovely restraint. Oyster shell and sweet thyme. Crushed stone, too. Shining acidity. Delicious. From old vines planted in 1984. Drink or hold.

Varietal: Chenin Blanc

Chenin Blanc is widely recognized as being one of the finest and most versatile white wine grape varietals in the world. In their native home of France's Loire Valley, wineries have used this varietal for centuries to produce a wide range of excellent wines, made possible by the fact that the high acidity in the grapes allows vintners to produce everything from dry, still varieties, to sparkling crémants and sweet dessert wines. One of the key features of this grape, and one which has won it many admirers, is the fact that the transparency of the varietal allows it to express the finer features of the terroir it is grown on, and also allows it to demonstrate the skill of the winemaker in the bottle. These grapes are a hardy varietal, growing well in moderate climates and in heavy clay-like soils all over the wine producing world.

The coastal region of South Africa is a wonderful place for viticulture. With gorgeously long, hot summer days, tempered by brisk oceanic winds, the grapevines can grow healthily, the fruit can ripen fully, and beautiful wines of great character and flavor can be made. For several hundred years now, the coastal region of South Africa has proven itself to be a highly important wine region, capable of supporting many grape varietals, suitable for still, fortified and sparkling wines. Today, the most popular grapes by far are Chenin Blanc, which produces the most recognizable wines of South Africa. However, also popular are many of the Bordeaux varieties of red and white grape, along with relative newcomers, such as Pinotage, which grow exceptionally well in the coastal terroir.
