The 2019 Friuli Isonzo Sauvignon Blanc Piere is fragrant and bright with lifted aromas of honeysuckle, acacia flower, lemon blossom and sweet almond. This pretty wine livens up the palate and puts freshness first.

The wildly intense bouquet of the 2019 Sauvignon Blanc Piere first leans toward the tropical spectrum, as kiwi and sour melon give way to pungent florals. However, time in the glass brings forward a more mellow and sweetly perfumed mix of ground ginger and lemon curd contrasted by fresh sea air. This is a textural thrill-ride, both glycerol and enveloping in feel, soothing the palate with notes of ripe citrus and peach, yet with a wonderful balance of acidity that creates lift and a more delicate feel to the experience. Nearly a minute goes by, and nuances of young mango, orange zests and custard echo throughout the finale; yet the end note here is one of freshness. There is an amazing amount of pleasure to be found here, and while I don't see the 2019 as the longest-lived rendition of Piere, it will make a lot of people happy over the medium term.

COLOR: Bright straw yellow color. NOSE: The nose is elegant and complex with mineral notes and ripe aromas of citrus and exotic fruits, together with fresh hints of sage and lemon verbena. FLAVOR: The sip is full, fresh and persistent with a pleasant finish of mint, lime and minerals.

Varietal: Sauvignon Blanc

Sauvignon Blanc grapes originated in France, where they are still widely grown today and treated to a wide range of processing practices – from aging in oak barrels, blending with other varietals, and undergoing malolactic fermentation to encourage a more mellow, buttery finish. These green skinned white wine grapes are highly versatile, and are now grown in several countries around the world which have the correct climatic conditions for getting the best results from them. Generally, Sauvignon Blanc varietal grapes prefer a cooler climate, as too much heat dulls the flavor present in the fruit. As such, they are generally grown in valleys and on coastal areas, where they can benefit from cooling breezes before being typically harvested early in the summer. The grapes themselves produce wines which are often very dry and crisp, yet full of a wide range of flavors including grasses, tropical fruits and citrus notes.

Italy remains very much a 'land of wines', and one could not imagine this country, its landscape and culture, without it.
