The 2017 Chardonnay is whole-bunch-pressed and matured in 30% new oak with no malolactic. The tightly wound bouquet features scents of lemon curd and passion fruit, the oak discreet and playing a supporting role. The palate is crisp and taut on the entry with hints of almond and nougat interlacing the citrus fruit. A velvety, medium-bodied white, with a light mix of baked pear, honeysuckle and preserved lemon flavors, framed by sleek acidity. Shows good cut on the finish.

There's a Smarties candy edge to the nose of this wine, like white flowers and white fruit mixed with a touch of chalk. The palate is light and easy, with a slight bitter-melon edge that lends a soft texture throughout the close, while medium acidity keeps the palate refreshed.
Winery
Bright and rich in color. The nose is abundant with aromas of butterscotch, marzipan and dried apples. The palate is fresh and vibrant with a good backbone of acidity, balanced by creamy textures. Full bodied and round, the wine concludes with a crisp and lingering finish.

Varietal: Chardonnay

For most people, the Chardonnay grape varietal is one of the quintessential white wine grapes. It isn't difficult to understand why; Chardonnay may well have started off in regions of France (where it is still used widely today in both single variety white wines as well as sparkling Champagne wines) but it is now grown in every wine producing country in the world. Indeed, it was the New World that took Chardonnay to some exciting new extremes – this relatively neutral grape has the fantastic ability to carry much of its terroir in the bottle, resulting in a fascinating range of flavors and styles. Furthermore, Chardonnay is one of the few white wine grapes which is well suited to aging, as can be seen in some of the excellent produce consistently coming out of Burgundy, and elsewhere in the world. With everything from buttery, creamy characteristics to vibrant tropical fruit notes, Chardonnay will never cease to surprise and impress.

Indeed, in the late 18th century, wines from in and around Cape Town were regarded as amongst the best wines on earth, and were adored for their exoticism and big, fruity flavors Today, the South African wine industry is booming, and wineries are appearing each year along the sun drenched and windy oceanic coastline. Many grape varietals are now grown in the region, however, Chenin Blanc remains the country's flagship varietal, with over eighteen percent of vineyards in the country used for this particular grape, closely followed by Cabernet Sauvignon and Colombard.
