With vibrant green citrus and hints of briny salinity, this blend from The Hilt's Estate vineyards is a lovely prototype of the racy Chardonnay the windy, chilly side of Sta. Rita Hills can produce. Spicy jasmine aromas give it a tiny tropical spin, mixed with live zest and minerals. Crisp green apple joins that driving citrus (think lemon verbena) on the palate, delivered with taut textures, with a strong vein of minerality continuing through a dry, vibrant finish.

The 2019 Chardonnay Estate is a gorgeous, budget-friendly white to drink now and over the medium term. Sage, mint and citrus flesh out nicely. Time in the glass brings out lovely mid-palate creaminess to lay off the wine's natural tension and bright acids.

Vibrant, toasty, and reserved. Fresh pineapple. Lemon curd with powdered sugar lift. Lithe and graceful. Exotic and saline. Like oyster brine. Long life ahead. Remains taut and reserved with a fine level of soft and supple fruit. Loquat, green apple, chamomile tea, ginger, lime pith and agave. Absolute finesse with a touch of the raw energy from the cold Pacific winds. A wine of place and of attitude. Cold and steely with an undeniable touch of warmth, generosity, and overall pleasure.

Varietal: Chardonnay

In the past couple of decades, the sales of wines made with Chardonnay grapes has risen and fallen more than once. For many people, this green skinned grape was marred by a poor reputation for bland and uninteresting wines, a great shame considering the fact that Chardonnay grapes have proven time and time again to be interesting, versatile and full of surprises. Most commonly, fine Chardonnay wines are buttery, smooth and creamy as a result of malolactic fermentation, yet with hints of tropical fruits and orchard fruits such as apples and pears. What is most remarkable about Chardonnay grapes, however, is the fact that unlike many other 'white' grapes, they are exceptionally good at holding the characteristics of their terroir in the bottle. As such, despite their fluctuating reputation, this is one grape varietal which produces constantly surprising, impressive and varied wines.

Santa Barbara benefits from the same west coast sunshine the rest of the state does, and has a fine set of soils which help give the wines some of their distinctive flavours. The majority of Santa Barbara wines are red, with Cabernet Sauvignon being an important grape varietal for the dozens of wineries which call the county their home. However, white wine production is very much on the increase in Santa Barbara, as wine-makers discover how good the blend of sunshine and Pacific wind can be for many classic French white wine grape varietals.
