This has started to mature already, with a mellow and understated profile of gently mulled cherry, red licorice, sweet bay leaf and worn cedar gliding through the subtly persistent finish. Nicely done for the vintage. Drink now through 2029. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 3,242 cases made.
Winery
Deep ruby-red. Sexy aromas of dark berries and mocha. Plush, superripe and deep, with a palate impression just this side of heavy. The wine's texture of liquid velvet is leavened by a rocky, minerally element. A voluminous wine whose big, ripe tannins reach the entire palate. Surprising vinosity carries the fruit on the aftertaste. This is a new bottling for us, from an historic vineyard on Larkmead Lane which surrounds the former Hans Kornell Winery—which in turn enclosed the historic Larkmead Winery. That winery dated from the 1880's, when it was owned by Lillie Hitchcock Coit of Coit Tower fame. Located on the valley floor, we surmise that Ritchie Creek, separating the Spring Mountain and Diamond Mountain appellations, once ran through this site, resulting in the prominent gravel and excellent drainage which distinguishes this vineyard. I had worked with some parcels from Larkmead while I was with Rudd, so I knew its potential for quality. This first vintage is blended of 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Petit

Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon

From the valleys of California and Chile to the rolling hillsides of the Bordeaux region of France, the one red wine grape varietal you will find in abundance is the Cabernet Sauvignon. This darkly colored grape has been cultivated since the mid 18th century, when it was borne from a cross of fine Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc varietals. Since then, it has spread around the world and has been received with pleasure by wineries looking for a varietal which delivers excellence of flavor and aroma, whilst being hardy enough to resist frost and rot and other such difficulties.
