Clean aromas of blackberry, graphite, black peppercorn and a hint of tar show on the nose of this bottling. The palate is fresh and lively with crisp plum, pluot, raspberry and lavender flavors, as white pepper brings spice to the finish.

Also from the estate vineyard, the 2020 Syrah Estate was brought up all in neutral barrels. It's deeper, almost opaque purple hue gives way to an exotic, perfumed, medium-bodied Syrah that has plenty of plum and blueberry fruits as well as ample floral, incense, and sappy herb-like nuances. As with all these wines from Donnachadh, it's impeccably made, has ripe tannins, and terrific overall balance.

The 2020 Syrah Estate is intensely savory and vibrant. Lavender, plum, spice, mint and black pepper are all lifted by a healthy dose of whole clusters. I very much like the energy here. It will be interesting to see if the 2019 gains a bit more mid-palate depth. The first wines from this striking vineyard certainly point towards a bright future.

Varietal: Syrah

There continues to be much debate surrounding the name of the Shiraz/Syrah grape varietal, with many experts still quite unsure which came first. Indeed, even the origins of this varietal are more or less unknown, despite it being most commonly associated with the Rhone Valley of France, and New World countries, most notably Australia. However, its popularity and unique characteristics have seen it planted all over the world, where it continues to impress with its powerful flavors and wonderfully spicy notes of pepper and clove. Shiraz/Syrah wines are renowned also for their versatility, and are regularly used in single variety still and sparkling wines, as well as blended and oak aged wines which demonstrate its ability to express its terroir and secondary flavors very well.

When it comes to New World wine regions, it is widely agreed that many of the finest wines are grown and produced in California. The long stretches of coastline and the valleys and mountainsides which come off them are ideal areas for vine cultivation, and for over a century now, wineries have found a perfect home in the hot, dry state, with many of the wines produced here going on to reach world class status. For over a hundred years, Santa Barbara has been using the blazing Californian sunshine and cooling Pacific Ocean breezes to produce classic French grape varietals of stunning quality and distinction, leading many people to refer to the county as the 'Californian Provence'. Indeed, the terroir of Santa Barbara is not so dissimilar to that of many great French wine regions, and this may go some way to explain why the red and white wines which are produced there pack in so many interesting and enticing features.
