The 2016 Cabernet Franc Nathan Coombs Estate is deep garnet-purple colored and a little youthfully mute, opening out to reveal redcurrant jelly, kirsch and blackberry preserves plus hints of pencil shavings, cigar box and dried Provence herbs. Medium to full-bodied, it has a rich, solid frame of grainy tannins and plenty of freshness lifting the red and black fruit to a long savory finish.

As well as the 24 wines Paul Hobbs makes across three brands in California and New York, he co-owns four wineries globally and consults with six wineries in the US and another six in South America. His Coombsville Cabernet Franc (the AVA is dominated by an ancient volcanic caldera) is plush and textured with a violet-and-blueberry bounce of freshness, plus tobacco leaf, menthol and dark chocolate (5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 1% Petit Verdot).

The 2016 Cabernet Franc Nathan Coombs Estate has come along beautifully since I last tasted it. The fruit has started to flesh out, making the tannins feel a bit less imposing than they once did. Today, the Franc is deep, fleshy and seductive in every way. Dark cherry, plum and lavender are some of the many notes that emerge to grace this exquisite wine. Paul Hobbs comments that few barrels were culled out of the unbottled blend he showed me earlier this year. That extra commitment to quality paid off big time.

This is very fine-grained and polished with beautiful dark-fruit and currant character and a mouthfeel that is caressing and beautiful. This is very agile and potent. Drink in 2022, but already a beauty.

This sports a rich feel, with layers of smoldering tobacco, dark currant paste and blackberry puree coursing through. Features a tug of graphite and a backdrop of roasted sage, while the finish shows both polish and earthy grip. Rock-solid and in need of cellaring. Best from 2021 through 2031. 243 cases made.

Varietal: Cabernet Franc

In its native France, the Cabernet Franc varietal grape is used in the production of a wide range of wines, from the bright and pale red colored single variety bottles, to the magnificent oak aged and world-beating wines of the Bordeaux region. The past century has seen many other countries catch on to the importance of this fine grape varietal, and today, it is one of the most widely grown grapes in the world. It thrives in cool, temperate valley regions, where it can ripen fully and produce plump fruits carrying all their distinctive flavors and aromas. The production of Bordeaux-style wines around the world simply wouldn't be able to reach such heights without Cabernet Franc, which lends its fascinating and complex aromas to the mix and makes them the memorable wines they are.
