The 2018 Camille Hommage Le Mesnil-sur-Oger is sourced from Volibarts, a well-exposed parcel in Mesnil that informed the 1961, the last Coteaux Champenois made at Roederer. It was aged in a combination of 60% amphora, 20% new oak and 20% steel. Lemon confit, almond, dried flowers and tropical accents fill out the layers effortlessly. It will drink well right out of the gate. (Originally published in May 2021)

From a 0.55-hectare parcel in lieu-dit Volibarts, Roederer's 2018 Coteaux Champenois Le Mesnil-sur-Oger Hommage à Camille unwinds in the glass with an understated bouquet of white flowers, linden blossom, citrus zest, blanched almonds and rock salt. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and layered, it's seamless and complete, with bright girdling acids and an intensely chalky finish. Lecaillon believes this will be long-lived wine, developing additional facets with age; and having followed an open bottle over several days, I'm inclined to agree with him.

An elegant, lightly mouthwatering white, displaying framing flavors of Gala apple, yellow plum and chamomile, with lithe, lemony acidity and a minerally undertow of chalk and oyster shell. Drink now through 2025. 240 cases made, 25 cases imported.
Winery
Very fresh, precise and pure bouquet, with warm toasted notes of hay, wheat and dried nuts, concentrated juicy ripe fruit (melon, pear) and lightly honeyed floral notes. After aeration, we have a lovely bouquet of reductive aromas with spicy nuances. Intense, concentrated and fresh on the palate with candied citrus fruit and a juicy, almost oily texture. Chalky and saline notes then follow and are underpinned by a lovely tannic structure. The finish has a mouth watering texture with toasted notes that provide great aromatic length. The whole is vibrant, perfectly integrated, precise, powerful and fresh.

Region: Champagne

The north-easterly region of Champagne in France is amongst the most famous and well respected wine regions in the world. It's principle produce, the elegant sparkling white wines made with a blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Petit Meunier grape varietals, have consistently grown in popularity for hundreds of years, and are still the sparkling wines of choice for most people across the globe. The region is quite an unusual one, in many ways. The high altitude and cool climate make it difficult for the grapes to ripen, but it is helped enormously by the mineral-rich, chalky soils which typify the region, and the heavily forested areas which help maintain moisture in the soil and an even temperature. The wineries of the region have generations of expertise, and know exactly how to make the most of their grape varietals, resulting in the distinctive and famous wines of Champagne we know and love.

Country: France

French winemakers are subjected to several laws and regulations regarding the wines they produce, and how they can be labeled and sold. Such procedures are designed to increase the overall quality of the country's produce, and also to ensure that wines made in each particular region or appellation are of a character and type which is representative of the area. Thankfully for consumers of wine world-wide, the French have a particularly high reputation to uphold, and seem to do so flawlessly. Every year, wineries from all over France produce millions upon millions of bottles of fine wine, making the most of their native grape varieties and the excellent terrain which covers most of the country. From the expensive and exquisite red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy, to the white wines and cremants of central France, the French are dedicated to providing the world with wines of the highest quality and most distinctive character.
