The sparkling 2018 Izar-Leku is from the Getariako Txakolina appellation and was produced with 90% Hondarrabi Zuri and 10% Hondarrabi Beltza grapes. It was kept with the lees for one year (one-third in barrel) and with a second fermentation in bottle where the wine matured with the lees for 36 months (they don't want a longer time with the lees). It has 12.55% alcohol, a pH of 3.123 and 8.2 grams of acidity, which is quite high, making it vibrant and lively on the palate and with a bone-dry finish. It has a fascinating and complex nose that is very attractive, aromatic, expressive and open. 2018 was a cooler year with more rain in Zarautz, and the search is for purity, finesse and depth. It has abundant yeasty aromas and a saline note and is clean and delicate with very abundant bubbles. It feels a bit too young (keep it for a while) and with very high acidity. 16,000 bottles produced. It was disgorged in September 2022. ... More details

Winery
This traditional-method sparkler is a blend of Hondarribi Zuri and Hondarribi Beltza, hailing from the seacoast town of Zarautz. The vines are perched right above the ocean on raised trellises, growing on clay soils streaked with slate and basalt. Aged 30 months in bottle on its lees after the secondary fermentation. No dosage.

Varietal: Champagne Blend

The sparkling wines of Champagne have been revered by wine drinkers for hundreds of years, and even today they maintain their reputation for excellence of flavor and character, and are consistently associated with quality, decadence, and a cause for celebration. Their unique characteristics are partly due to the careful blending of a small number of selected grape varietals, most commonly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. These grapes, blended in fairly equal quantities, give the wines of Champagne their wonderful flavors and aromas, with the Pinot Noir offering length and backbone, and the Chardonnay varietal giving its acidity and dry, biscuity nature. It isn't unusual to sometimes see Champagne labeled as 'blanc de blanc', meaning it is made using only Chardonnay varietal grapes, or 'blanc de noir', which is made solely with Pinot Noir.

Country: Spain

Spanish wines are renowned world-wide for carrying all the passion and character of the Spanish culture within them. Any lover of Spanish wine would undoubtedly be able to confirm this notion, as the variety and range of flavors and aromas coming from the high end of Spanish produce is truly impressive, and continues to delight and fascinate both newcomers and the more experienced. Spain benefits massively from an ideal climate for wine production and vine cultivation, with its long, scorching hot summers and far reaching oceanic breezes working perfectly with the native and imported grape varietals, which thrive on the mineral rich soils that cover much of the country. With centuries of knowledge, and generations of expertise under their belts, Spanish wineries continue to focus on raising the quality of their nation's wines, helped along the way by relatively new laws and regulations regarding regional excellence and representativeness.
