The Boroli 2017 Barolo Brunella draws its fruit from the calcareous clay soils in the village of Castiglione Falletto. The wine is tart and streamlined with fruit that is slightly soft and plush but not too ripe. I am impressed by the silky nature of the tannins across these new releases from 2017, a vintage that made tannin management more of a challenge because the summer heat forced earlier ripening. Having said that, this Brunella is definitely more structured compared to the other two wines tasted from this estate. There were 11,500 bottles made. ... More details

Cherry and mint are the main flavor themes in this fresh, fluid red, which is complemented by leather, tar and sanguine notes. Tightens up by the finish, where lightly astringent tannins reign. Best from 2025 through 2046. 950 cases made, 150 cases imported.

Sweet fruit with cherry, toffee, chocolate and walnut character. Asphalt, too. It’s medium-to full-bodied with creamy tannins and soft, succulent finish. Give it two or three years to come together. Try after 2023.

Aromas recalling iris, woodland berry and camphor shape the nose along with dark spice notes. On the austere, elegant palate, tightly wound, fine-grained tannins support spiced cranberry, pomegranate and licorice before closing on hints of blood orange.
Winery
A clear ruby red color, with very light orange reflections. A net aroma in which liquorice stands out at first, immediately followed by a fruity scent; the aroma makes you scent it again and again to discover different and pleasant facets. The fruity aroma magnificently prevails after a few minutes in the glass. A very enveloping, fresh and harmonious taste, with a delicate and tasty presence of wood. A long lasting taste that invites to sip it slowly again and again.

Varietal: Nebbiolo

The Nebbiolo grape varietal is widely understood to be the fruit responsible for Italy's finest aged wines. However, its popularity and reliability as a grape which gives out outstanding flavors and aromas has led it to be planted in many countries around the world, with much success. These purple grapes are distinguishable by the fact that they take on a milky dust as they begin to reach maturity, leading many to claim that this is the reason for their unusual name, which means 'fog' in Italian. Nebbiolo grapes produce wines which have a wide range of beautiful and fascinating flavors, the most common of which are rich, dark and complex, such as violet, truffle, tobacco and prunes. They are generally aged for many years to balance out their characteristics, as their natural tannin levels tend to be very high.

Region: Piedmont

For hundreds of years, the beautiful alpine region of Piedmont in north-west Italy has been producing excellent quality red wines, and some of the most characterful sparkling white wines to have ever come out of the Old World. The region is dominated by the mighty Alps which form the border between Italy, France and Switzerland, and the Moscato grapes that are grown in the foothills of this mountain range carry much of the Alps' flavors in their fruit, and are fed by crystal clear mountain waters. However, it is the Nebbiolo, Dolcetto and Barbera grapes which are the real stars of this region, and the highly respected wineries which cover much of Piedmont have generations of experience when it comes to processing and aging these grape varietals to produce the superb wines which come out of appellations such as Barolo and Barberesco.

Country: Italy

Italy is recognised as being one of the finest wine producing countries in the world, and it isn't difficult to see why. With a vast amount of land across the country used primarily for vineyard cultivation and wine production, each region of Italy manages to produce a wide range of excellent quality wines, each representative of the region it is produced in. Any lover of Italian wines will be able to tell you of the variety the country produces, from the deliciously astringent and alpine-fresh wines of the northern borders, to the deliciously jammy and fruit-forward wines of the south and the Italian islands. Regions such as Barolo are frequently compared with Bordeaux and Burgundy in France, as their oak aged red wines have all the complexity and earthy, spicy excellence of some of the finest wines in the world, and the sparkling wines of Asti and elsewhere in Italy can easily challenge and often exceed the high standards put forward by Champagne. Thanks to excellent terrain and climatic conditions, Italy has long since proven itself a major player in the world of wines, and long may this dedication to quality and excellence continue.
