Anyone who has ever ventured into a young vintage port will know that few regions in the wine world can deliver fruit with the force, power, energy and exuberance of the Douro -- so why not try to capture just a little of that in a simple, inexpensive, straightforward but exuberant red table wine? That's exactly what this wine does. It's a deep, saturated black-red in colour, and is packed with the irresistible tea-leaf, peony and black-fruit character of Douro's classic varieties. That's exactly what you find on the palate, too, shouting the wine's origins at the same time as it delivers fruited perfume and pleasure, juicy acidity and supple, tumbling tannins on the palate. This Value Best In Show is, in that sense, a distant Iberian echo of our Best In Show Fleurie: both are perfumed head-turners and smile-inducers. (Best in Show) - DWWA 2022

Region: Douro

From their beautifully rich Bordeaux style wines, to their famous fortified wines, the wineries of Douro in Portugal have long been recognized as being amongst the finest of the Old World. For over two thousand years, Douro has been an important center of fine wine production, and it isn't difficult to see why the earliest attempts at viticulture led to an ever expanding wine industry in the region. The beautiful Douro river provides the vineyards with all the moisture and nutrients they need in order to grow fruit of real character and flavor, and the long, baking hot summers help ripen the grapes and intensify their juices. Today, Douro wines are popular all over the world, and wineries are producing more bottles than ever before to keep up with demand. Although the region is still most famous for the fortified wines of Porto, the still wines have centuries of tradition, and a whole set of distinctive flavors and characteristics that simply cannot be ignored.

Country: Portugal

One of the oldest regions of Portugal for wine production and vine cultivation is the Bairrada, the lush and clay-rich region responsible for an impressive range of red, white and rosé wines of exceptional quality. As with much of the country, this region benefits from long, hot summers, allowing the grapes to ripen to full maturity and thus carry a wide range of flavors and aromas. However, each region of Portugal produces wines which reach a high level of quality, from the more urbanized regions around Lisbon and Porto, where the famous fortified and Colares wines originate, to the island of Madeira and the Dao river valley, which each have their own distinctive wine cultures. The several thousand years of viticultural history in Portugal has allowed Portuguese wineries to master their own traditional techniques, which are still employed to this day across the country, yielding excellent results for the world to enjoy.
