A blend of 55% Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Barossa Valley Shiraz, Yalumba's 2013 The Caley is only the second vintage to be released. Aged in 40% new French oak, it features fine, aristocratic aromas of pencil shavings, mint and dark fruit. Cassis, baking spices and hints of meat and mint come forth on the palate. It's medium to full-bodied, with rich, velvety tannins that remain firm and lasting on the finish. I tasted this from a bottle that had been decanted the previous night, so you'll want to give it plenty of air, or ideally, just cellar it for another five years before broaching a bottle. ... Saturated ruby. Displays powerful, smoke- and spice-accented aromas of ripe dark fruits, licorice, vanilla and potpourri. Sweet and expansive in the mouth, offering lush boysenberry, cassis, spicecake and floral pastille flavors plus suggestions of mocha and cola. The floral note echoes strongly on an extremely long, sweet finish that's framed by harmonious tannins.

This blend of Coonawarra cabernet and Barossa shiraz has performed well in 2013 with an array of cassis, blackcurrants, redcurrants, some richer blackberries, as well as leafy and gently herbal accents. The palate is the real story though, showing a bright, even-tempered and fleshy core of red plums and darker cherries. Silky and even-paced tannins and a lithe, juicy finish. Drink or hold.

Strikingly dynamic tannins distinguish this second release, ensnaring and extending the muscular fruit with its black tea and cedar riffs. Rich, glossy blueberry, juicy blood plum and savoury tapenade reflect a higher proportion of Barossa Shiraz than in 2012. Exclusively sourced from Coonawarra in 2013, the Cabernet injects a cool herbal note. Long, textured and involving, it spent 20 months in new French barriques (41%) and older French barriques and hogsheads.

Deep, dense red in colour. Distinct Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon aromas: fresh, cool and refined green olive, leafiness, iodine and intriguing, fine and complex aromatics. Richness and precision, revealing refinement of Shiraz with red currant and spice. Perfectly balanced acid and tannin line sweeping through to the long finish.

Region: Limestone Coast

The Limestone Coast in Southern Australia has long since been an important wine producing region for the country, with almost one third of all Australian wines being produced there. The region benefits enormously from its coastal position, enjoying a cool maritime climate for much of the year, complete with brisk ocean breezes which help the grapes ripen slowly and fully. Many of the highest quality wines of Australia are made in this special region, most notably the excellent Cabernet Sauvignon wines made from Limestone Coast grapes. However, grapes of both colors grow exceptionally well in the mineral rich soils of Limestone Coast, and wineries have for many decades experimented successfully with a range of grape varietals, making it an interesting and exciting region for wine makers and drinkers alike.

It took several decades of failed attempts at the end of the 18th century in order to produce vines of a decent enough quality for making wine, but since those first false starts, the Australian wine industry has continued to grow and grow. Today, wine production makes up for a considerable part of the Australian economy, with exports in recent years reaching unprecedented levels and even overtaking France for the first time ever. Whilst the greatest successes in regards to quality have been the result of the Syrah grape varietal (known locally as Shiraz), Australia utilizes several Old World grapes, and has had fantastic results from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Riesling, Chardonnay and more. As the Australian passion for locally produced wine continues to develop, wineries have begun experimenting with a wider range of grape varietals, meaning that nowadays it isn't uncommon to find high quality Australian wines made from Petit Verdot, Sangiovese, Tempranillo and Viognier, amongst many others.
