The term 'vecchie viti' is not officially recognised by the law but is displayed on some labels to indicate the use of old vines - here in Pajé, the average age of the vines is 80 to 90 years old. This Barbaresco shows impressive fruit concentration. The nose is savoury, with rhubarb, liquorice and cinnamon, accompanied by subtle blood orange and wild strawberry. Parma violet, cinnamon and some bloody notes introduce extremely fresh red currants. Velvety and ripe, the tannins are as much extracted as they are soaked with blood orange flavour, integrated with lifted acidity and leading to a vibrant briny finish. ... More details

What a special treat. The Roagna 2016 Barbaresco Pajè Vecchie Viti shows extreme elegance and grace with heightened complexity and sharpness that can only be obtained with old vines. It opens slowly to reveal red and purple fruits and moves forward to shadings of spice, earth and truffle essence. What stands out most, however, is the very silky and fine nature of the mouthfeel. Only 3,112 bottles were produced.

Blue flower, tobacco, camphor and ripe berry are just some of the aromas you'll find on the stunning red. Firmly structured and still youthfully austere, the compelling palate features ripe Marasca cherry, crushed raspberry, licorice and crushed mint alongside noble tannins. Bright acidity keeps it well-balanced and lends a seriously ageworthy structure. Drink 2028–2056. (Cellar Selection)

The 2016 Barbaresco Pajè Vecchie Viti is an exotic, totally beguiling wine laced with super-classic Nebbiolo notes of rose petal, orange peel, cinnamon and macerated cherry. Aromatic, sensual and constantly changing in the glass, the Pajè Vecchie Viti is everything Nebbiolo and Barbaresco are supposed to be. The complexity here is just unreal.

This red isn't showy, but there is a depth to it, offering flavors that range from strawberry and cherry to wild herbs, hay, tobacco and iron. Lean and vigorous, with a firm grip of tannins on the finish. Best from 2025 through 2043. 260 cases made.

green grapes

Varietal: Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo grapes have been grown for centuries in the hilly region of northern Italy, and have more recently started to appear in many New World countries, too, where modern vintners have expressed great enthusiasm for their fine characteristics. Their fame and popularity is widely known, and the Nebbiolo varietal is recognized as the grape responsible for producing the legendary fine wines of Italy. Indeed, this grape is packed full of intense and interesting flavors, ranging from truffle and prune, to tobacco and violets, making the wines they produce a sensory delight which simply get better the longer they are aged. The grapes also lend a beautifully pale red color to their wines, which helped secure their place as some of the finest and most elegant to be found anywhere on earth.
barrel

Region: Piedmont

The beautiful region of Piedmont in the north west of Italy is responsible for producing many of Europe's finest red wines. Famous appellations such as Barolo and Barbaresco are the envy of wine-makers all over the world, and attract plenty of tourism as a result of their traditional techniques and the stunning setting they lie in. The region has a similar summer climate to nearby French regions such as Bordeaux, but the rest of their year is considerably colder, and far drier as a result of the rain shadow cast by the Alps. The wineries which cover much of Piedmont have, over many generations, mastered how to make the most of the Nebbiolo, Dolcetto and Barbera grapes which thrive here, and nowadays are beginning to experimenting with many imported varietals to increase the region's range and meet international demand.

Country: Italy

It isn't difficult to understand why Italy is famed not just for the quality of its wines, but also for the vast variety and range of characteristics found in the wines there. The terrain of the country varies wildly, from the lush rolling green hills and valley of Tuscany, to the sun drenched rocky coasts of Sicily, the mountainous and alpine regions of the north, and the marshy lowlands of the east. Italy really does have a little bit of everything. Combine this huge range of landscapes with an almost perfect climate for grape cultivation, and you have a country seemingly designed for viticultural excellence. The results speak for themselves, and it is clear to see that wine has become an inseparable part of Italian culture as a result of its abundance and brilliance. Each village, city and region has a local wine perfectly matched with the cuisine of the area, and not an evening passes without the vast majority of Italian families raising a glass of locally sourced wine with pride and pleasure.
