The 2018 Saumur Bizay Clos de Guichaux is from another monopole the family holds in Saumur. Planted in 2003 on silt and sand topping relatively soft limestone bedrock, picked by hand, fermented naturally and aged for nine months in older oak barrels, the intensely yellow-golden 2018 opens with intense and perfectly ripe and aromatic fruit on the immediately attractive and charming nose. Full-bodied, round and juicy, with remarkably finessed acidity and a really friable limestone character, this is a very attractive yet concentrated, dense and substantial, textural Saumur Chenin. Not only for immediate pleasure, the wine can age for years, if not even decades. Its finish is intense, and long yet also fine and fresh and reveals fine tension and mineral grip. Very stimulating and clearly limestone-driven but in a very charming manner. Tasted in May 2021. ... More details

Winery
A very pure, white-stone character on the nose, framed beautifully by some fresh, matchsticky reduction. This is immediately very convincing. The palate is super, lightly mineral, rich in pear and white peach fruit, a marker of the vintage, though it is superbly reductive also. It builds into a great, grippy finish.

green grapes

Varietal: Chenin Blanc

Originating in France yet now grown in many parts of the New World, Chenin Blanc is one of the most versatile and highly regarded white wine grape varietals on earth. These green skinned grapes hold a relatively high acid content, and as such can be used for making still white wines of exceptional quality, as well as superb sparkling wines (such as the Crémant wines of the Loire Valley) and extremely aromatic dessert wines. Their natural transparency means that they are a fine grape for expressing their terroir in the bottle, and winemakers often experiment with this varietal to coax unusual and intense flavors from the grapes, such as allowing the development of noble rot on the fruit in order to make sweet and viscous wines of a unique character.

Region: Loire Valley

The ancient wine region of the Loire Valley in France is a perfect place to discover the country's finest examples of white wines, which are made with a highly successful blend of traditional and modern wine-making techniques. Indeed, the Loire Valley has a wine-making tradition which stretches back almost two thousand years, and today continues to be a standard bearer for fine white wines made predominantly with Chenin Blanc and Sauvignon Blanc varietal grapes. However, it also produces superb red wines from the Cabernet Franc grapes which thrive there, and plenty of excellent rosé and sparkling wines for which the region is also famous. With almost ninety controlled appellations, the Loire Valley is an extremely important region within France, and the significance of their produce cannot be overlooked.

Country: France

France is renowned across the globe for its quality wines and the careful expertise which goes into making them, but what is truly remarkable about this relatively small country is the vast range of wines it produces in such huge amounts each year. Not only are the finest red wines in the world said to come from the beautiful regions of Bordeaux and Burgundy, but elsewhere in the country we find the Champagne region, and areas such as the Rhone Valley and the Loire, whose white wines consistently receive awards and accolades by the plenty. This range is a result of the great variety of climatic conditions and terrain found in France, coupled with generations of wine makers working within single appellations. Their knowledge of specific terroirs and grape varieties has, over time, perfected the production of wines within their region, and the end results continue to impress the world to this day.
