Candied grapefruit, guava and lemon perfume this dry, lusciously full-bodied Riesling. Fruit tones are more elegant on the palate, edged by steel and zippy, tensing acidity. It's delightful already but should open and yield by 2022 and improve through 2030, likely longer. (Editors’ Choice) ... More details

I love the complex nose of pineapple, yellow grapefruit, smoke and dried sage. In spite of the considerable concentration, this is remarkably light on its feet, thanks to the uplifting freshness and very minerally acidity that lights up the long finish. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

From three parcels with vines averaging 25+ years of age, the 2017 Riesling Höllberg GG offers super ripe and intense tropical fruit aromas intertwined with flinty-mineral notes. Juicy, piquant, refined and mineral on the palate, this is an already accessible dry Riesling with fine tannins and good grip, but the wine stays more in your cheeks than in the throat. Very attractive but not that long or tensioned. Tasted at the domaine in March 2020.

Apple seed and wet stone on the nose anticipate a somewhat austere palate impression, though fortunately not one lacking in fresh apple and pear juiciness. The feel here is subtly waxy. Fruit skin chewiness lends invigorating tang to a finish whose simultaneous richness seamlessly perpetuates the wine's midpalate impression, and to which alkaline and stony notes lend fascinating counterpoint. Not for the first time, I prefer the exuberance and sheer sensual appeal of the ostensibly lesser "Porphyr" bottling, but time may bring an extra measure of depth to this Höllberg.

Elegant and spicy, with a prominent peach note accented by pine and mineral details. Well-made, featuring intense acidity, depth and complexity. A bit tight, but builds nicely to the mouthwatering finish. Best from 2022 through 2029. 300 cases made, 30 cases imported.

Varietal: Riesling

Riesling grapes have been grown in and around central Europe for centuries, and over time, they became the lasting symbol of south Germany's ancient and proud wine culture. Whilst the reputation of German wines abroad has in the past been mixed, the Germans themselves take an enormous amount of pride in their wineries, and Riesling grapes have now spread around the globe, growing anywhere with the correct climate in which they can thrive. Riesling grape varietals generally require much cooler climatic conditions than many other white grapes, and they are generally considered to be a very 'terroir expressive' varietal, meaning that the features and characteristics of the terroir they are grown on comes across in the flavors and aromas in the bottle. It is this important feature which has allowed Riesling wines to be elevated into the category of 'fine' white wines, as the features of the top quality bottles are generally considered to be highly unique and offer much to interest wine enthusiasts.

Region: Rheingau / Rheinhessen

Near the fertile banks of the mighty Rhine river, the beautiful German region of Rheingau has long been considered one of the finest regions in all of Germany for viticulture, and has a wine making history which stretches back to the 10th century. As such, the wineries of Rheingau have generations of experience and expertise when it comes to making the most of the grape varietals which flourish on the south facing valley sides, and are capable of producing white wines of extraordinary character and distinction. Over seventy percent of the wines produced in Rheingau are made with the dry and crisp Riesling grapes, much loved for their delicate flavors and ability to express the best features of their wonderful, windswept terroir. However, more and more wineries are beginning to plant Pinot Noir grapes, and several others in order to expand their portfolio.

Country: Germany

As in many Old World countries, the rise of viticulture in Germany came about as a result of the Roman Empire, who saw the potential for vine cultivation in the vast flatlands around the base of the Rhine valley. Indeed, for over a thousand years, Germany's wine production levels were enormous, with much of the south of the country being used more or less exclusively for growing grapes. Over time, this diminished to make way for expanding cities and other types of industries, but Southern Germany remains very much an important wine region within Europe, with many beautifully balanced and flavorful German wines being prized by locals and international wine lovers alike. The hills around Baden-Baden and Mannheim are especially noteworthy, as these produce the high end of the characteristic semi-sweet white wines which couple so perfectly with German cheeses and pickled vegetables. However, all of Germany's wine producing regions have something special and unique to offer, and are a joy to explore and experience.
