The 2019 Gaudrets is not shy to come forward in a line up of Savennières. It has the ferocity of female gladiator throwing a javelin: wild, firm and uncompromising. It is clear on its winemaking inputs with its impressive smoky oak and flinty reductive character, and yet it just about gets away with it, with its silky concentration (15hL/ha yields due to frost) and focus. The pithy grapefruit-like fruit, floral and almost spicy characters stand up to the winemaking. It's hardly subtle at this young age, but it is super young and has plentiful tension. With no historical examples of this young estate's wines, we don't know how it will age. There's definitely plenty of good componentry here to go the long haul. ... More details

A sultry, smoky version, with crushed ginger merging with green apple and nectarine. Savory and focused, building in mouthwatering acidity and density, while acacia honey, oolong tea and high-toned oak spices filigree the complex palate. Drink now through 2032. 400 cases made, 100 cases imported.
Winery
Coming from several southeast-facing plots located high up the village on a plateau of aeolian sands and deep black schists.

green grapes

Varietal: Chenin Blanc

One of the most versatile white wine grape varietals in the world is the Chenin Blanc, a green skinned grape most closely associated with the still and sparkling wines of the Loire Valley, but which are cultivated in many countries across the globe and revered for their fine character and unique attributes. One of the key features of the Chenin Blanc grape is the fact that it is able to express the characteristics of the terroir it is grown on, making for highly interesting and complex white wines prized by those looking for something a little different. Their high acidity means they are perfect for producing a wide range of different wine styles, from flavorful still white wines to elegant crémants and sweet, viscous and unusual dessert wines.
barrel

Region: Loire Valley

In France, the region most closely associated with the production of fine white wines is the Loire Valley, a particularly fertile and temperate region near the Atlantic coast. This reputation is certainly justified, and the Chenin Blanc and Sauvignon Blanc vines which flourish in this region produce both dry and dessert wines of exquisite character and flavor However, the region is also responsible for some seriously high quality Cabernet Franc based wines, such as those found in the sub-region of Chenin, and plenty of elegant bubbly crémant wines, which are often fruitier and more lively than those found in Champagne, and with a character all of their own. The Loire Valley is an ancient wine region, with archaeological evidence dating wine production in this area back to the first century.

Country: France

French winemakers are subjected to several laws and regulations regarding the wines they produce, and how they can be labeled and sold. Such procedures are designed to increase the overall quality of the country's produce, and also to ensure that wines made in each particular region or appellation are of a character and type which is representative of the area. Thankfully for consumers of wine world-wide, the French have a particularly high reputation to uphold, and seem to do so flawlessly. Every year, wineries from all over France produce millions upon millions of bottles of fine wine, making the most of their native grape varieties and the excellent terrain which covers most of the country. From the expensive and exquisite red wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy, to the white wines and cremants of central France, the French are dedicated to providing the world with wines of the highest quality and most distinctive character.
