The Selbachs’ 2006 Zeltinger Schlossberg Riesling Beerenauslese smells of resin, caramel, white raisins, and grapefruit rind, and maple syrup, with smoky, spiritous overtones. In the mouth, it is creamy and butterscotch-like, and its resinous character reveals itself as in part due to the small cask in which this was vinified. This is certainly impressively mouth coating and intensely persistent, if lacking in the lift and elegance of many of the most exciting 2006s. It will be fascinating to follow for 30 or more years, no doubt, but because like nearly every Selbach wine it is not overloaded with youthful sweetness, you could enjoy it tomorrow without pangs of conscience. ... Winery
Balls-to-the-wall power here, an enveloping BA that's elegant and not voluptuous, with creamy-malty flavors but even more lovely, with slatey-apple flavors; almost tenderly vinous primary fruit-slate notes that don't have to impress you since you're already melted. One of the greatest sweet wines of the vintage.

green grapes

Varietal: Riesling

The pale skinned fruits of the Riesling grapevine have been grown in and around Germany's Rhine Valley for centuries, and contributed much to the country's wine culture. Today, Riesling grapes are grown and processed in several countries around the world, where they are prized for their ability to grow well in colder climates, and their unique flavors and characteristics. Riesling grapes produce an impressive array of wines, including fine semi sweet and dessert wines, to excellent dry white wines and sparkling varieties, all which allow the grape to shine through as a premier example of an excellent white wine varietal. One of the things which makes Riesling such a special grape is the fact that it is highly 'terroir expressive', meaning that the features of the land it is grown on can come across well in the flavors and aromas in the wine. As such, it isn't unusual to find flavors of white stone, or smoky ash-like notes in a fine Riesling alongside the more usual orchard fruit flavors more commonly associated with good white wines.

Country: Germany

Despite being known primarily for sweet and semi-sweet white wines, Germany actually produces a surprisingly large and varied range of wines, with many reaching an extremely high standard and being very well received on the world stage. The terrain across much of the southern parts of the country is extremely fertile, with mineral rich soils adding a wonderful edge to already excellent grapes, and thus resulting in delicious and highly elegant white and rosé wines. The climate in many parts of Germany also allows for some more unusual wine-making practices, with certain regions specializing in the highly aromatic and distinctive 'ice-wines' which are gaining popularity by those looking for something a little more intense and unusual. With these wines, the producers allow the grapes to freeze through the early frosts, resulting in a higher sugar content and a fantastic set of flavors and aromas in the finished product. Germany has long since favored quality over quantity, and a new enthusiasm for fine wine within the country is producing truly exciting results, using a blending of traditional and contemporary techniques.
